WOOO Grae!! Congrats! That's a fantastic honour.
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Congrats to everyone who heard back from Berkeley or Caltech!
Maybe I'll get in on the next wave...

Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
I just got accepted to Yale! I got an email that just said that a "decision had been reached" and then directed me to check my status, so I was sure it had to be a rejection. Did anyone else hear from them today?
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
yes, I just heard from Yale and I am accepted. Their timing of releasing offers doesn't really make sense to me.... At least, to me, Yale isn't competitive with Berkeley, Stanford nor CalTech... Anyway, it reduced one from my checklist for admissions. Congrats to all of you guys who got a offer!
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
I got accepted by Yale today too, and I'm also not impressed with anything I've seen from them during this process. Everything would indicate that Yale believes it is a first rate physics program and that they think people should be as excited about going to Yale as going to MIT, Harvard, Stanford, etc... I got a really vague email from a prof there a week or so ago, and it seemed to essentially be probing my response, as if they wanted to see how excited I was about Yale.

Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Yale's overrated. The only reason they are ranked as high as they are is the name. I applied there because they have a lot of research in quantum info, but overall I don't think their department is as strong as say UCSD, Texas, Colorado, Penn State, etc, let alone places like Stanford and Harvard. They should be down in the 30-40 range, IMHO.
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Did any of you who got into berkeley, not send in the Undergraduate Program Form?

I sent mine incelts wrote:Did any of you who got into berkeley, not send in the Undergraduate Program Form?

Congrats to everyone (especially those who heard from Berkeley and Caltech)!
I also heard from Berkeley yesterday - admitted with a 12-month fellowship. I did turn in the undergrad program form.
Also, if anyone has any questions about Caltech, feel free to send me a PM.

Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
yeah I applied there because of how strong they were in quantum info as well. I figured if that was the best place I got in, then I'd do that. But they were really a backup school with a very well-known name. We'll see how much money they want to give me, but unless it is outrageous, I probably won't be going to the open house.fermiboy wrote:Yale's overrated. Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Yale's Applied Phys Superconducting Qubits are easily the best in the world. Four nature papers last year. My supervisor has told me to take Yale even over Harvard - so I wouldn't be so quick to discount Yale entirely. Santa Barbara's Martinis' group is catching up quickly, though.
Is that your area of interest Grae, or are you on the theory side of quantum info?

Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
That's what I was trying to say Zoe. Their good in quantum info but that's about it. I don't think their research programs in other areas really justify their rankings. For instance, I don't remember very much HEP research going on there, or cosmology. You would think a place ranked in the top 20 would be strong in all areas, and most of them are, Yale seems to be the exception.
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Does anyone know what the deal with Cornell's admissions is? (Preferably the type of info peder had about UCSB, but I'll take what I can get).
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
I'm into nanoelectronics. Quantum information just sounds really cool though and is something I have interest in, although I know nothing about it.Zoe wrote:Yale's Applied Phys Superconducting Qubits are easily the best in the world. You got accepted? Did you just find out?
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Congrats Grae! Are you excited or something?
I just got the email from Paula as well. Quite an eventful week!
Still haven't heard from Harvard nor UCSB yet. UCSB had their first round a while ago, but has Harvard sent anything out yet?
As for the Berkeley Undergrad program form - I sent it in a couple of weeks late when someone on this forum brought it to my attention.

Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
So I see quite a few Stanford accepts. Maybe the lot of us should coordinate something for their visit day to make the hotel costs cheaper. Congrats to all.
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Are the hotel costs coming out of your guys' pockets or is Stanford getting the bill?ibbgs wrote:So I see quite a few Stanford accepts. Maybe the lot of us should coordinate something for their visit day to make the hotel costs cheaper. Congrats to all.
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Wow, Stanford! Thats awesome Grae!
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Congrats on Stanford!!! Has anybody heard back from Stanford physics?
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
It depends on where you come from. Stanford covers up to $500 which won't even cover the flight from Canada, and they said we are on our own for booking hotels.
Btw this is regarding people accepted to Applied Physics at Stanford, not Physics. Unless of course the Physics open house ends up being the same day.

Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Has anyone who went to the Caltech interviews (Applied Phys) heard anyhting back from them yet?
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
OK, well I live 25 minutes away and there is lots of room on my living room floor. I haven't discussed this idea with my boyfriend yet, but if there is any interest in this let me know. It's also a good place to chill afterwards because the complex has a hot tub and a ping-pong table and all that good stuff.ibbgs wrote:It depends on where you come from. Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Congratulations for Harvard acceptance, grae313! (It is pretty obvious that you will get into Harvard also). GREAT WORK! Good luck.
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Christ Grae, you are seriously on a roll. Congratulations!
Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Got into Minnesota! Finally, an acceptance to a school I'd be genuinely thrilled to go to!

Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
Got into U of Florida, and now I realize I don't know anything about it! How good/bad are they? I got into UCSD, so I'm starting to think this school doesn't matter... I applied on the recommendation from one of my faculty at the last second. I didn't have time to vet, my Phys GRE score was lower than expected and I needed two backup schools pronto.
Anyway, congrats to the acceptances, especially Caltech and MIT! I'm still waiting on ALL SEVEN of my top choices. Lol, it's like all the schools are conspiring together and sending my letters in reverse order of the ones I want to get into!
But I'm taking the lack of any letter from these places as a good thing: it means I'm not rejected, and so I'm still in the running!
Plus I had an encouraging conversation with one of my professors today, so I'm feeling positive, at least at the moment. I just hope they look at my depressing 760/69% as the fluke that it is.

Re: FALL 2008 acceptances
lol, thank you, VT. I almost feel kind of shitty about it, I mean it is just getting ridiculous now. Especially when people with better test scores than me aren't getting inVT wrote:Congratulations for Harvard acceptance, grae313! (It is pretty obvious that you will get into Harvard also).
