FALL 2008 acceptances

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

I have not heard yet.

Why don't you just look on the profile page? That will answer your question faster, I think.

Nah I haven't heard from any school other than my safety. I didn't apply to condensed matter anywhere except at my safety (since that's pretty much all they had). I don't even know what CM really means, lol. I don't know how people can write on an application "I'm interested in condensed matter" since as far as I know it's an extremely broad field with a huge array of unrelated specialties...

Condensed matter is exactly what it's name implies.

...But what it means is that you're about 9000% more likely to get a job than someone in, say, cosmology.

About all I know about condensed matter is that it's the opposite end of the spectrum from high energy physics, i.e., it's in the realm of testable science.

I just got an email telling me I have been accepted to the UCSD physics department. We'll see if I'll make it to the visiting weekend, as Santa Barbara appears to be on the same day and I'm still waiting on them.

Congrats zxcv. UCSD just emailed me, too. But like you I'm also waiting on UCSB.

C'monnnnn, UCSB and Columbia! No whammies no whammies.

I also got a UCSD acceptance. Is the RSVP link in their email disfunctional for anyone else? Or is it just me.

So I just got my first reply, accepted to UCSD! By e-mail, no info on financial packages, that's "early March". Congrats to all the people that got acceptances since I've been here last! :D :D :D

@zxcv

I noticed on the profile page, it says you received an acceptance from UCSB on 2/19 by email. Is this a mistake? It says you are still waiting to hear from UCSD.

So either you are lying on this thread or on the profile page.

Yeah, I updated the profile thread with the wrong school by accident. I'm still waiting on Santa Barbara -- I got the email from UCSD today like everyone else with the bad link.

I may not actually visit UCSD since I spent last summer there so I already have some basis to make a decision on it. But it still would be nice to talk to more advisers there in a serious way and get more perspective on the grad program specifically.

fermiboy -- everyone has the same code for the open house website. So I'm pretty sure they would check your name, too, they just don't want bogus submissions. Otherwise I might pass mine on :).

Just in....

Rutgers 2/20 by e-mail. I'll be honest here, I know very little about Rutgers, it was a last minute decision to apply there. Anyone have anything good to say?

Don't worry about it, as a young man who grew up in Pennsylvania I am conditioned to have similar opinions on Jersey and Baltimore.

Hey hpharty, I also got into Rutgers and can say its a good school (depending on your field--mine is condensed matter) and if people scare you out of living near campus w/ NJ horror stories, you can live in Brooklyn, NY which is only 31 miles away. Brooklyn is awesome.

Hi hpharty,

I go to Rutgers and I live in one of the "bad" areas off campus. You know what, other than the parking authority, it's a good place to live. The driving's a bit aggressive (as it is everywhere in NJ), but there are tons of theatres, its easy to get into NYC or Philly by train (which is located in the middle of the campuses). I lived on Busch campus for a few years, which is probably where you'll be living if you decide to live on campus-that's the best study campus, etc. As far as the bad sections go, there are a few areas to steer clear of...there's a lot of drugs around where I live and a few people got shot, but all that's isolated, nowhere near the campuses. Don't live in Brooklyn, way more expensive and the commute will be a big pain in the ass.

Sorry for the long-wordedness. Good luck, Rutgers rocks, were gonna win this year...even without Ray Rice, damnit!!!

Damn it, damn it, DAMN IT! I WANT IN!

/sigh

I know this is just going to end up like my internship experience, seven schools, none of which email me to know that I didn't get in and get seven rejections in a span of a couple of days after I ask.

Oh yes, who the hell is garden, the messiah?

Congrats to Princeton acceptances.

I heard from another sucking place called UVa.

I'd be so relieved to get rejection email/letters from MIT, UIUC and Princeton but the hell places do not send the letters until March forcing me again to live in a shadow of hope. :(

@ VT

I'm with you about rejections. I've been waiting for a Cornell rejection since a bunch of people got theirs last week, and I'd really just like to get it over with. I see neoslovakia got one today (2/20), and his stats are much better than mine, so perhaps I'll know soon. It looks like UCSB will hold us in suspense until March.

Perhaps we should just email them and ask? I'd bet their minds are pretty well made up already.

If it makes any of you people waiting feel better, I got my Princeton rejection promptly yesterday, so no letter does not necessarily mean anything.

To those who have received acceptances to Florida State, that seemed to require a response by February 29th:

Florida State's Dean of Graduate Studies has acknowledged (to a friend of mine) that their offer letter was in violation of the resolution agreed to by almost all US schools, and they are sending out revised offer letters today or tomorrow. There will be no requirement that an answer to their offer arrive before April 15th. Thank you bringing that to our attention.

dlenmn,

Im told UCSB is done.

(clarify, the current batch of acceptees have to be approved by the chair, then all the acceptions and rejections get sent out next week)

Did you apply to theoretical or experimental? I know a couple guys who applied for experimental that I would bet money on their admission to Caltech. I get the feeling that they only sent out some of the acceptances, but I could be wrong?

I applied for experiment, and have been accepted by Caltech. Maybe they send out for different sub-fields (ie: AMO, particle, etc.) at different times?
