2013 Acceptances

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Rationale being...? Just taking a quick look at previous acceptances on this forum, a number of people still get acceptances (from everywhere, including top schools) through March, and some even in early April.
Frankly, I'm not sure how much guidance dates from previous years should or could give, even at a week-to-week granularity. Some programs seem to always have pretty quick decisions (e.g. Wisconsin), and others probably have consistently later decisions. But when the decisions go out still depends on an admissions committee made up of really busy people getting together and agreeing on things, and if you've spent any time in academia...

But seriously, just because X University sent out a big wave of decisions in the second week of February last year (or the last couple years) doesn't mean that we've all been rejected by X. Of course, if University of Y sent out a bunch of admits last week, and you didn't get one, the situation is a bit different.

If you don't mind me asking, did you recieve an email from a professor you mentioned in your SOP or an official email of acceptance?

I got a reply from a professor who's in the field of interest I pointed out (AMO), but it seems he was writing on behalf of the AMO groups within MIT, not just his. All of my research has been in CME and I expressed just a nascent but developing interest in doing AMO stuff in my SOP, so I was gently surprised by this....

I'm guessing that all the MIT and Chicago acceptances are done and anyone who didn't hear back was rejected baed on last year's results.

If things turn out as they hope (and their top choices accept), yes. If not, they've got another round (or two) of offers to make later. No one has said yes yet, so even the schools don't know if they're done.

I thought each group is sending at different times at MIT and so far I have only seen people getting into condensed matter but no high energy physics

For people that have been rejected from Cornell, did anything change on your status page to reflect this like it did for the accepted students? It's been three days since the string of rejections started getting posted here and on gradcafe, which I'm assuming means I'm rejected based on Cornell's past patterns, but I haven't gotten anything via email yet. Have others not been contacted yet by Cornell?

I see a lot of admissions from Ohio State (Physics & Astro) in the past couple of days over at gradcafe, including today (Saturday). Anyone know if they're still making decisions? The seem to have been sending them out in short bursts every 4-5 days for the past ~2 weeks. Getting impatient.

yup, just got rejected from MIT and princeton. Still waiting on Harvard. Just got accepted into Yale at least. Well I got their open house invite so I assume they forgot to send out the acceptances or its an implied acceptance.

My status page hasn't changed at all. I was the same way, hearing that people were getting Accepted and Rejected around Tuesday and Wednesday. I just got an e-mail yesterday evening. Not sure if it's based on what group you apply for or what, but I ended up getting my e-mail too haha.

Hi guys, so I was wondering if anyone knows the status of Stanford, UCSB, Illinois Urbana-Champaign ? I've received acceptance letters from Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCD and UCR. But I'm waiting for the rest !! Thanks!!

I know Illinois - UC sent out acceptances on Feb 15 and UCSB sent out two waves of acceptances but people say there is one more to come. Stanford has only sent out Applied Physics. From what gradcafe says, Stanford won't send out anything until close to the end of February.

Last year UIUC seems to have possibly done just one wave, but two years ago it did two, so here's hoping it does two this year. Theoretically will be roughly a week from now if it happens going on 2011's dates.

Rejected from Ohio State Astronomy, emailed to ask. To paraphrase: ~130 applications from excellent candidates, while they were hoping for a class of 5 . Still no word from OSU Physics.

Really hoping for Minnesota astroph to pull me out of the waitlist.

Anyone have any updates on Caltech? Looking at gradcafe it seems they started sending out most of their acceptances around this time last year.

My guess based on last year's results is that Chicago and Harvard are done, while Berkeley might have one more wave.

Chicago did two sets two years ago, so it's difficult to say. I think Harvard has only done one wave the past two years though.

Acceptances from UC Davis and UNC.

I haven't received my rejection letter from Chicago yet, so they might not be completely done.

So far I've only heard back from Ohio State (accepted) and Duke (Waitlisted).
Is it possible this is because I did all my applications right before the deadlines and I may still have a chance, or does this mean I'm getting rejected from everywhere else?

No one is rejected until they send out rejection letters. Your best chances are when you're accepted early on in the admissions season (because that means you were a no-brainer), but once they know they're going to reject you, the majority of schools aren't going to hold on to that information. If you haven't heard back, you're still under consideration.

Santa Cruz interviewed for it's top ~15 spots. I got the impression that they're done unless they get a large number of rejections.

PS I'm talking about the Astro department I have no clue about physics.

I see.. Does that mean I'm probably on the borderline for most of the schools I applied to? I suppose that's better than getting rejected instantly.
I'm just worried because UT-Austin said that they let their domestic applicants know sometime in mid-February and I still haven't heard anything from them. I was pretty sure that I would get into Texas as well..

I really don't think departments are in much of a hurry when it comes to rejection letters. Just looking at gradcafe, rejections come anywhere from 1-2 weeks after the last admissions up to over a month or none at all (only upon asking) for most schools.

I had to ask Ohio State astro about my status and they must've had the decision made for at least a week, while the page still reads "in review".

Hmm, so "in review" at this point, probably means rejected?

Edit: Huh, I just checked my Ohio State status page and it still says "in review" even though they offered me a fellowship and invited me to their open house through email on 2/5.

I don't think "in review" means rejected. Most schools just don't change that status. Some do, but many don't.
