2012 Rejections

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Has anyone heard from Rice U astro? I've seen a few acceptances for physics but nothing from the astro side of their physics & astro dept.

@hyc34, did Berkeley say that they had already sent out all their offers when you called? In other words, do you know if there's any hope for anyone who hasn't heard from Berkeley at this point?

EDIT: decided I couldn't wait any longer--rejected via phone inquiry.

MIT rejection, 2/29 via email. Can't say I'm surprised.

Berkeley accepts one in seven (from past year statistics). this acceptance rate is definitely not low.

so i think as im (we are) rejected, i suck.

What you say is correct for domestic. TheY have a very lower acceptance rate for
International IMHO. So I personally don't hope in uc Berkele too much

Rejected from MIT by email this morning. Apparently they had 30 spots for 750 applicants.

from AIP's statistics the acceptance rate for internationals isnt that low either... even though berkeley's not like caltech or harvard which has half of the students foreign.

so i feel really bad. the rejection email says they have 867 applicants and the eventual class size is 45. base on their past practice, they should have given out about 3*45 = 135 offers.

did they change the status of your application on https://gradadmit.berkeley.edu/apply/login.html after sending the rejection email to you? I haven't received the rejection mail yet and there is no change on the status page... Does this mean they were too lazy to send the rejection email or still there is a chance to be admitted?

regarding the berkeley issue, how come and they have not notified all the rejected applicants? Does this imply that there is gonna be a second wave of acceptances? and btw, did anybody get rejected via email?

Universities don't always notify people in a timely manner. Even those who are rejected outright aren't usually notified for a quite a while. A quick search of previous years' application profiles will answer your question. All you have to do is search "Berkeley" and take a look at when people were accepted. Short of someone from UCB posting some inside knowledge, this will likely be the best indicator.

So I did this and found that there was the usual wave (right around now), plus some others who were accepted later (2nd week of March). Most of the rejections seemed to be in the 2nd or 3rd weeks of March. The take home lesson: sit tight and hope for the best!

If waiting is too much to bear, you could always call/email them as well!

When I called they said that they had "just started notifying rejected applicants."

So the real question is, should I call Berkeley and get my hopes dashed, or should I let myself dream for another two weeks?

CU Boulder yesterday.
Haven't heard back from Minnesota/St Louis(Washington)/Indiana/Florida/Florida State. Is that a good/bad thing?
I hope I'm in their waiting list or sth. Otherwise I'm done. Back to parents' basement.

I don't know about the others, but Florida's open house is March 12 and 16, and I heard back from them in mid Feb. I think many other people also heard from them in early Feb or mid Feb too. For Indiana, they emailed me around the second week of Feb saying that they are reviewing the applications and will be making decisions in the upcoming weeks, yet I haven't heard from them for three weeks. I think I may be on the waitlist.

rejected by Clemson

I have not heard from Florida/Florida State either but as for Indiana, I just got an email 2/29 saying I was wait listed with "very high chances of being admitted" if that helps anybody.

Anyone has heard rejection from these?

UCSD Physics
Caltech Astro
JHU Phys & Astro
Columbia Astro

I hope they'll reply asap, be it rejection or acceptance! So far I got three offers, three rejects and two waitlists.

Got inpatient and call Berkeley, rejected. Also called Harvard but they said that they could not check application status over the phone and to just wait for the letter....giving me some more false hope

How come Clemson rejected you? I thought you had a decent profile. Did they cite any reasons?

@blighter

Yeah I have a decent profile, but my PGRE was not stellar. Idk I have been accepted to 4 other programs and wait listed at 3 others. They said they had a huge applicant pool this year, larger than most, and they had to get rid of qualified students and they were sorry, you know a basic response! lol Its ok I am happy to be going somewhere

Anyone rejected from UCSB yet? Last year there was a flood of them on 2/28 but haven't seen any so far this year...

I'm assuming I've been rejected (considering all the acceptances out and about) but it would be nice to know.

Almost certain that I saw one a while back, but I don't remember in what context. It was likely someone who called/emailed about their status. Hope you hear some good news soon!

I just got one more paper accepted. Not by an important journal though. Should I inform the schools which have rejected me about this, and would this change their mind?

Did you already tell them that you had a paper that would be published soon? I think it would really depend on the universities.. I mean, papers and publications are really more like bonus points, right? Also, I remember reading a comment from someone else that made the point that colleges don't mind rejecting qualified applicants because they expect them to get in somewhere else.. So, I think it'd be good to update it to universities who haven't made decisions yet at least, but in my opinion, I don't think it would matter as much for the ones that decided already (unless it was a groundbreaking publication).

Hey, anyone know if Berkeley is actually sending out rejection e-mails, or are the gradcafe people asking them via e-mail? :/ I don't know if I want to kill that tiny bubble of hope I have yet..
