2012 Acceptances

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

AH, nevermind, LPL is at UofA.
Good point -- I've clarified it to say UofA now.

Thanks. I got an email from the Academic Affairs manager with 2 letters attached, one from the admission admin assistant with details about the open house and an official admit letter from the department head. The email did say every prospective student is assigned a faculty member and a current graduate student to answer any questions about the program (and that they will be in touch soon).

But I think you mean if a professor interested in my research will be contacting me, and I think the answer to that is no -- LPL also just admit to the department instead of a particular group.

Caltech APh visit

Post by cjaphys » Wed Feb 01, 2012 7:45 pm

Invited to Caltech APh Visiting Days on Feb 22-23. I couldn't dig up much from past years on what this invitation means. Does anybody know whether it's just a formality on the path to being accepted, if there's an interview, and if some of the folks invited get turned down?

Offer from Cornell Physics (Feb 1, around 8pm EST) via email. 1 year graduate fellowship.

Encourage us to attend the Prospective Graduate Visit Weekend (March 9-10).

What do long distance (such as international) admits think about attending it?

Just got an email from a school saying that my application is under review.
I won't give name of the school since this information is totally useless.

I wasn't interviewed. They just asked questions like 'why do u want to come to Yale' through emails.

I'm now number 3 on the waiting list, which means, the last one... chance is slim.

InquilineKea wrote:Hmm interesting - what types of questions did they ask?

Did they interview you before putting you on the shortlist?

Since the Yale Grad School seems to require interviews before offers (http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2012/ ... nterviews/).

[am wondering since I'm flying to Yale next week for an interview+open house, for a related department, though I may have the option to dual-PhD with Astro]

How did you learn the waitlist and your position in the waitlist?

I just got an email of unofficial offer from University of Nebraska-Lincoln on 2/7. I know the school is not the best schools that most people on here are applying to, but my profile is not great and it's my first acceptance, so I'm very happy about it. Now I no longer need to panic.

No, I am not ashamed. I'm actually happy about it since I did not expect to hear from them that soon. I just submitted my application like last week. However, it's not my first choice, so I'm still waiting for other better schools on my list.

I too just got accepted to Urbana Champaign and I happened to visit on my own accord last week. The city wasn't super exciting (coming from Austin), but I have to say that the faculty was super friendly and the graduate students (at least the ones I talked to) seemed very happy... Both great signs in my opinion!

that's good to hear brooks, and congrats on your acceptance. i'm thinking about attending the open house to see it for myself, and perhaps the department can make up for the boring city some. i thought that their website was the most well-made out of all of the schools.

Just got accepted by UC Santa Cruz astro (their email shows all recipient emails so I actually know who are accepted together with me!).

*In case* I get one more offer from California, I'd like to go to their open houses, but I haven't heard back from any school. So would anyone who has already got offers from PHYSICS of Berkeley, UCSB, UCSD Stanford and ASTRO of Caltech, post the open house dates, so that I can book air tickets early?

Thanks much.

Haha - all I'm wondering now is when UCSC is going to write that rejection letter for me, and whether or not it personalizes rejection letters for individual applicants who might have had a lot of pre-application contact.

Though a lot of people are rejected via website, which probably means no personalized rejection letter?

As a funny aside, I think I accidentally referred to Harvard as Princeton in one sentence is my personal statement (I copy/pasted sloppily!).

Acceptance email from Harvard. I would probably decide between MIT, Harvard, and Stanford when the rest of the acceptances come in. Going to decline UCSB and Cornell, so good luck to those waiting to get in.
