I had found the first one and thought the video was completely ridiculous! I like the playing, but still not as much as Casals'. When people criticize Yo-Yo Ma they usually accuse him of being too precise and too technically adept. They say it sounds like they are listening to a computer and that the music looses some of its humanness and some of its raw power. I'm not sure if I agree but I can see where they are coming from.YodaT wrote:God I always feel light-headed after listening to the cellograe313 wrote:1 is not bad but it's really all about the prelude to 6! Pablo Casals plays my favorite version but it's not on youtube. gives you epic dreams.
Anyway, if you like the suites you should definitely get the recording of Pablo Casals playing them if you don't already have it. His recordings made them famous.
I guess I'm more accustomed to Yo-Yo Ma's style... haven't really looked much into Pablo Casals. I've really been into the cello and violin for only a year now... I'll have to listen to him more

The Casals recordings are old -- from the early 1900's I think -- and you can hear the artifacts of an old recording. However, fan's of Bach's Cello Suite's (some of the greatest music in all of history, IMO), almost universally agree that Casals' recordings should be in your collection. But of course, ultimately it just comes down to your personal taste and you might find that Casals is simply not to yours
