2011 Rejections

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

UCSB for me too. I'm going to go ahead and blame it on being international and UC budget issues.

Dear *****,

Thank you for applying to MIT. Unfortunately we are unable to offer you admission into the Graduate Program in Physics this year. We received approximately 700 applications for 30 openings which resulted in the refusal of many excellent applicants.
That's the last of them. Not totally unexpected.

MIT.
I started the application on the day of deadline and submitted just before 12.
Turns out to be a waste of time.

Anyone else receive an email from Davis saying a decision will be posted March 3rd?
We are in the process of making a decision on your application for admission. You may review the decision after 8:00 a.m. PST on March 3, 2011, by accessing your UC Davis application on the online admission web site.
Knowing a decision is coming in a couple days is almost worse than wondering when it's going to come.

I disagree. If i had an exact timeline of when decisions would be done and available, I wouldn't be spending all day at work religiously poking at the refresh button on my phones email app at 5 minute intervals.

I'm a bit like Pavlov's dog, except that I tend to get a negative reaction when I succumb to my neuroses. Come on UC Irvine, this puppy needs some positive reinforcement!

I got that email a few weeks ago. within an hour my acceptance was posted on the website (even though it said they would take a few days).

It is appropriate to ask the graduate admissions person why you were rejected. I get roughly 3 emails every cycle asking. Sometimes it's an issue that the person can do something about, sometimes it isn't. The only time it's awkward is if there is something cautionary or negative in a letter, since those are confidential, so I have to be much more vague. A professor mentioned in the SoP may have no say with the committee, so that wouldn't be useful.
I've asked a few professors and graduate assistants so far as to why I've been rejected, and so far I've just gotten vague responses: 'we had a strong pool of candidates and can only admit a few of them etc etc'. But one did mention I was close to the cutting point.

Rejected by UPenn. I was considering this my safety so it would've been frightening if this had come in first instead of almost last. I already got into my 3rd/4th pick(UCSD) so it's not tragic, but this getting into school stuff is HARD! Would've liked to have some options for cities where people don't have sand for brains

Are you talking about all the girls who work at gamestop or the subset of girls who work at gamestop that I'd gladly play twister with?

It was a response to an inquiry from the APS department, not Physics.

If they haven't made a decision on an application, it's safe to say that they will probably reject. Am I right?

Most years that's true, so probably brace yourself. Though I've heard this year there's a higher chance of being pulled off of a wait-list at the last minute, because schools are being more conservative with their acceptance numbers. I might know more if you tell me the schools you're waiting on.

I think Berkeley and Austin still have some of their acceptances to hand out, and probably a few others (Santa Cruz?). They traditionally accept people late, so there's a greater chance at those places.

It's looking like grad school will not be for me next year. Rejections so far and I am still waiting on: Rutgers,New Brunswick; UMD; UPitt; UMass-Amherst, Lehigh U, UDelaware, and Georgia State U.

My profile is not very impressive, which is why I keep it to myself. :|

None of us own a school and run its admissions, so there's no need to impress us. It's impressive in and of itself that you want to study physics; lesser persons would be frightened by challenge.

UMD, I think. I emailed, and they responded with the following:
Dr [adcomm chair] does not want me to tell anyone until April 16 if they were admitted or not. You can contact him if you would like to check with him.
No reason to hide acceptances, so....

By the way, what a jerk the committee is for keeping rejections hidden. What for? I have most of a mind to withdraw all applications to places I haven't heard back from...At this point I'm not really interested in playing their stupid waiting games any longer.
