2011 Acceptances and profile discussions

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

sphy, I think you misunderstand this email. It only means that his application is complete and under review, just like the 700 other complete applications they currently have under review. All 700 complete applicants receive this email.

That said, I'm sure he'll get in :P

Actually I was so excited that I misunderstood. One thing, I like that school so much that It just gives me goosebumps.
Any way it proves how minutely you observe all the things that is happening here, even though you are about to finish your Graduation from Stanford perhaps.
My heartiest Thank to you for being there and guiding us in many ways. :P
All the best for your future. And the other fact is that your name keeps me reminding of GRE ( I don't know why?) and it's so simple just 4 letters and so is the motivation for choosing my name to keep me reminding of PHYsics.

So keep up dear Carl....

I had a phone interview with a Harvard Earth & Planetary Science professor today. She wanted to talk to me because she was a little bit concerned about my non-traditional background. In any case, she mentioned that the planetary science adcom will meet early next week with decisions being communicated to applicants by late feb. She also mentioned that the Harvard astronomy adcom met last week.

I've just been accepted to physics at Johns Hopkins. This is my first acceptance, so I'm pretty excited.

I think a batch of acceptances from JHU should come out soon because they invited me to an admit weekend at the end of February, and said that I should make travel plans soon.

It's a great deal since they'll comp the travel. I'm originally from that area, so I'll get a free visit with my family in addition to an admit weekend!

I'm pretty sure they send them out as they go through the applications, so if you haven't gotten one it could mean they just haven't gotten to your application yet. On the one hand, if they are just starting to send out these emails they must have a ton of applicants this year. On the other hand, it's getting pretty late in the month. I'd say, if you don't hear anything by the end of this week, give the admissions secretary a call on Monday and ask if you just need to be more patient or if there is a problem.

Does anybody know the general time of day to expect results. I got an acceptance yesterday at ~11am, and I'm not sure if this is typical. I just want to stop checking my email all day long if I know most acceptances don't get sent out until the end of the workday.

*Edit* Nevermind, thanks for the quick pm response. Acceptance by e-mail. Congratulations!

There is no standard time for sending them out. I've gotten them on evenings and weekends as well as business hours. Sorry. You could always just check once a day anyway

Dear ******

I am very pleased to inform you that you have been admitted to the graduate program in Physics at MIT, beginning in the fall term 2011. Congratulations! A formal letter with details will follow in a few days.

I am also delighted to inform you that you have been awarded a fellowship for your first twelve months; fellowships cover the cost of tuition, a living stipend (the amount for 2011-12 will be determined shortly; the 2010-11 monthly stipend is $2,400), and health insurance for the student. These prestigious awards give you the freedom to explore various options to work with our faculty during the first year. Afterwards you will continue to be supported, typically by a research assistantship from the group you choose to work with.

In order to help you make an informed choice which graduate school to attend (we hope that you will choose MIT!), you are invited to an open house for prospective graduate students. More details will follow, but for now, please save the dates: Thursday and Friday, March 31 and April 1. We hope that you will attend this event where there will be many opportunities to learn about MIT and to interact with our faculty. However, if for some reason you are prevented from attending the open house, please contact us to arrange a visit at a different time.

Congratulations once again, and we very much hope that you will accept our offer and join our community this fall.

Best regards,

Vladan Vuletic on behalf of the Physics Department at MIT

Completely OT, but I'm curious. How do you pronounce grae? Is it "G-ray", "gray", "G-R-A-E".....? And I'm also not sure about the 313. Or maybe it's all a mystery...

I was one of the 12. I don't know how many applications they got this year, but I think 150-200 is typical.

I had my UCSC interview today. The interviewer told me that out of 176 applicants, 33 were offered interviews and roughly half of those will receive offers.

No I did not get anything beyond the payment confirmation etc. email right after I submitted my app. I did inquire last week (MIT does make it really hard to find someone to ask), and within minutes I got an email from the secretary that my application is complete.

Like the color. 313 (I say it "three thirteen") was a significant date to me way back in high school when I started using this name.

How many of you have heard back from Austin? I know a few went out yesterday, and the PhD weekend is in 3 weeks. They accept a (relatively) large number though, so I'm still wondering where most of the acceptances are.

They've had my application since mid-november....
