can u pple tell meyour frank opinion about johns hopkins, ohio state and TAMU in high energy theory(string theory/phenomenology). I am an international student and it is difficult for me to make a decision. As I have inadequate exposure I want to keep my options open and go to a place which is decent in strings as well as other aspects of high energy theory. It would help if you can tell me about the relative strengths
of these places in different aspects of high energy theory......

OSU
@ Ohio State University Applicants
I got an e-mail from OSU telling that I would be considered for admission if a few among the applicants already offered admissions do not accept the offer. It would be very helpful if those of u who have applied to OSU but have better offers cancel your application to OSU. I am still waiting for my my first admit.

U MIchigan Waitlist
@ MoePhysics , JackSkellington and other U Michigan applicants
I have just received an e mail from U MIchigan Ann Arbor saying that I am in the wait list...so it would really help if anyone who has got into Michigan but has better offers can send their official rejections as soon as possible....
Thanks!!

Are you visiting Colorado on one of their weekends? If so, which one? I think I'm going Mar. 15-17

GPA ~3.45, ~3.7 Physics
GREs: V 780 (99%) / Q 800 (94%) / P 680 (55%)
Applied to (Condensed Matter/Biophysics, all):
UC Davis- A (2/8/07)
UCSD- (R as of 3/2/07, email)
University of Washington- ?
UColorado- Boulder- ?
UWisconsin- Madison- A (2/1/07)
UMich- Ann Arbor- A (2/8/07)
University of Chicago- (R 3/2/07, smail)
UIUC-?
Ohio State- A (2/1/07)
Boston U- ?
Case Western Reserve- A (2/8/07)
I'm not planning on accepting UCD, Ohio State or Case so I'll decline soon for whoever's on the waiting list.
For those accepted to the Chicago and Boulder-- did you find out be email? Do you think not hearing yet means I'm rejected? I hate waiting!

about chicago
I found out about chicago by snail mail. I thought I might have been rejected until yesterday because they had sent out some acceptances a few weeks ago(according to grad cafe) so I woundn't count yourself out just yet.

@lahardy
I found out from Colorado by e-mail two days ago. They still have not sent me anything official in s-mail yet.
Verbal GRE
Lahardy, that's a drop-jaw verbal score! I didn't know such scores were even possible: congrats on your verbal skills. (This may sound strange, but I honestly believe that good verbal skills are more important than quantitative skills in physics... you're gonna do amazing, man!) (or woman, but usually you say man no matter what)
You were aiming a little bit high. It is really nice that you got into UCSD!
Anyway I don't really understand why peolple consider Yale as a top place in physics. It is definitely a very strong department but doesn't compare to other top schools like Berkeley, MIT, Cornell etc. I would prefer Santa Barbara over Yale as well.

Also got the Columbia rejection
So far
Hopkins - A
NYU - A
Northwestern - A
U Washington - A
Chicago - R
Yale - R
Columbia - R
Still waiting on:
Harvard
MIT
Cornell
UCLA
Berkeley
Anyone know if there's still a chance of being admitted to any of these five that haven't made a decision in my case yet?

rejection!
I just got my rejections from UCSD (email) and Chicago (smail) today. It's OK... Chicago was a bit of a reach for me
Anyone have a preference for UMich or Wisconsin for CM? What about overall? I think it's between those two for me, so any input would help.
@skozmedia-- thanks!

I just got an acceptance letter (email) from UC Santa Cruz in Physics. Has anyone applied there as well? It's a very small department, but I think the CM research is pretty cool. I find surprising that they get so few grad students per year and that they have so few international students (http://www.physicsgre.com/forum/thread611.html).
Anyways, TA + Regents' Fellowship = $18,600. I have been receiving much more competitive offers... is Santa Cruz the cheapest city in California or what?

Hey, I'm new to posting here, but I've been keeping track of who's been hearing from what schools.
Just a few things:
Apparently, Stanford's applied physics program sent out acceptance emails on 2/27, and if you didn't get one, then no deal. I'm in the "no deal" category. I should be receiving the official rejection letter in about a week, I hear.
My boyfriend is a first year physics PhD at UCSC, and I can tell you that it is NOT cheap. We lived in Palo Alto(home to Stanford) the last year 2 years, and had a much bigger, nice place for less. It's something about the beach, I guess. And it is beautiful, so I can't really complain. I can tell you that he's pleased with his choice to attend UCSC, although he's been adjusting to being poor again after spending a couple years working in industry, where he made a lot more money and worked a lot less.
I'll be joining the UCSC community this fall in EE(that's where they hide the optics), so good luck if you decide to attend!

going postal....
I am assuming rejection from MIT since it seems like March 1 was the day for many places to send out offers. I have been checking my mailbox like a madperson. Why can't they just tell me I'm rejected already! I feel like they are just stringing me along. I don't want to make any final decisions (and turn down schools so that others can get offers) until I know for sure. Is anyone else still unsure of their status at MIT?
Still waiting for MIT... and Stanford. Maybe I'll go check my mail...
Ah, the fresh MIT rejection letter sitting in my mailbox. O well.
Just as a question, did anyone visit MIT or Columbia? I must say, they are two of the world's most depressing places on earth (I wasn't the one to post that on thegradcafe). Everytime I think about MIT or Columbia, I picture dark clouds and rainy days for some odd reason... and this is coming from someone who lived in Manhattan for four years.

oh well
So I got my wish (I guess??). Rejection from MIT by s-mail today. They said something about only offering 40 spots from 700 applications. Still stings a bit though...

This is just a gentle reminder to the physics applicant community at large: that backup school whose offer you have no plans whatsoever of accepting?
That school is probably the one I'm waitlisted at.
So...be a friend and save me the crushing indignity of applying for a real job while I pine away waiting to be bumped out of purgatory.

Might as well share my results with others - 3.86 GPA, Double major in physics/EE, 650V(%92)/780Q(%87)/6.0A(%96)/930P(%93), two summers of research
Ohio State - Accepted early February, snail mail
MIT - Accepted early February, phone
UCDavis - Accepted early February
UCSB - Accepted mid February
U of Illinois - Accepted ~ February 20
UCBerkeley - Accepted February 28
Still waiting on Stanford, Cornell, and Harvard. Cornell sent me an e-mail saying they're still reviewing my application... I've pretty much given up on Harvard, but I'm still crossing my fingers on Stanford and Cornell, but hope is dwindling...I shouldn't complain, since I've already been accepted to some awesome schools. What's that thing about contentment?
I went to visit Ohio...the faculty were great to talk to and they have a beautiful facility...not too impressed by the grad students though. Was worth the visit though. Especially for mini hardy. Oh, yes.

opticzrulz, what's your assessment of stanford's applied physics decisions based on? did you talk to paula perron or someone over there or is it just based on when the acceptances showed up on forums?
i feel like there HAS to be another round of admits... i think there are approx 40 offers made every year and i've only heard of 5 acceptances posted on the net.

xtripledot,
I emailed paul perron and she responded saying that all acceptance emails were sent out on 2/27, and that if you didn't get one, then they were not able to accept you this year. the first email I got was an automated response, then she wrote a more personalized email confirming that decision. i'm not sure what you would get if you were waitlisted.
she also said that this year had a lot of applicants, more than in the past, so it was very competitive this year. i think if you email her yourself, she'll let you know your status.
hope that helps.

weighing in
Figured since I'd been tracking the forms for a while, I should post my schools:
Wisconsin-Madison - Medical Physics - Accepted, 2/14
UCSB - Physics - Accepted, 2/14
Cornell - Physics - Rejected, 3/1; Accepted, 3/2
Chicago - Physics - Rejected, 3/2
re: Cornell-- still not sure what the deal was with that, but I have since confirmed that the offer was legit. That one felt good, seeing as Wisconsin and Cornell are tied for top choice. I did an REU at LEPP at Cornell last year, and am definitely looking at continuing that work.

I was accepted to U Michigan Physics in early Feb. I have been rejected from Chicago and Princeton. I was accepted to UCSB Materials and I just got back from visiting. I have never been so impressed in my life. The Facilities / Labs are top notch and so are the faculty in the science departments. It is the most beautiful place in the US and I recommend it fully. If you are interested in condensed matter it is the place for you to go.
