I think this sounds like a pretty good mix. Especially if your letter writers have connections at the schools to which you are applying, with good research and letters you've got a shot. Remember it's always a bit of a crap shoot though, and you probably also have a shot of not getting admitted anywhere. Safeties are your friend.

I was considering your lower 4 to be safeties. Remember it's perfectly possible to find lower ranked schools that have excellent and highly-regarded research going on in your area of interest, and that is the ideal safety school.

Apply now and if you don't get in anywhere you are excited about, you can take a year to strengthen your application. I have heard 10+ anecdotal stories of this and it has never hurt an application.
