Relocation question

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Relocation question

Post by ultraballer2000 » Thu Apr 22, 2010 3:50 pm

I don't think this has been brought up yet, but I was wondering if grad programs typically cover some part of your relocation costs. It would make sense that they did since they pay to fly you out and everything; however, I haven't heard anything about it officially.

From what I've heard, that's a no go. They pay to fly you out to get you to agree to come, why would they pay out once you've said yes? Okay, they're not that mean, but they also don't have that much money for that kind of stuff.

I don't think the school will reimburse you, but I believe you can write off moving costs as a tax expense.

damn, alright. I was just hoping that they would at least help out a little bit with relocation since I think most REUs do that.

You could request a forward on your first paycheck if you need help, but there is no more gift money at this point. They've already recruited you.

I can second the fact that moving expenses for this kind of thing are supposed to be tax deductible, so save all your receipts. If anyone has a spouse or someone who needs to come with you and needs to find a job, expenses required for them to get a job in the new place (travel and such) are also tax deductible.

Just curious, what REU's pay for relocation cost? I mean they will pay for your flight there and back sometimes, but the grad school already did that for the open house.

If a school is really nice and you didn't go to the open house, maybe just maybe, you could convince them to pay for your flight out in the fall. But I really doubt it.

For the most part, I don't think moving costs are covered. However, when I got my acceptance from UC Irvine, they offered up to $1,500 in relocation cost reimbursements, so you might just get lucky!
