Listing Grad school responses (Admits & Rejects)...
@jall, are you an international student? If so how were you informed of your rejection? Email? And have they sent out admission results to all the selected people? I got a reject from Indiana in the mail today, so now I'm worried ... 1 reject, 6 unknownsjall wrote:I was rejected in Chicago (Physics). I believe it was the TOEFL score!
astroste.. did they mention anything about that in the rejection letter?
So far, 1 rejection, 3 unknowns.
@CPT: I'm an international student, and the rejection came by mail. My overall TOEFL score was above the minimum, but in one section, the score was below the respective minimum. I don't know if that was the reason of my rejection, since the letter looked like a standard one, with no reference to the TOEFL score.
To everyone who received MIT acceptance letter: Are you international?

hi jall
I was applying to the astro dept of chicago. I emailed them to ask what is my current status since I did not receive acceptance or rejection. But the reply was funny. They said they told me in email (which I had never received) that my TOEFL is below minimum and my application would not be considered. They did not charge my application fee neither. So practically this was an unsuccessful application rather than rejection.
For your case, my friend got a similar "rejection" email about his sub-score on TOEFL. They said it is unlikely to admit blah blah blah.

Got my first rejection. From Yale, which was among my first choice.... This is really hard to overcome. First rejection and from the first choice.
Already had acceptances from USC, UMass, U Florida, Indiana Bloomington, UW Madison and Rutgers.
I know it was stupid to hope having 730 for Physics test being an international, but still... That wasn't the glorious day, really.((((

We heard from Yale through email which gave us the link to check the status online. I would much rather just had the email reject us. Gave me some hope for the minute while I was logging into their website.
The website to check your decisions is the same as the one you applied on and the same one you can check your status.
Good luck all

Daharoni, I completely agree with you. This roulette is annoying. But, to be honest, the name of an email "decision available" sounded like 99% "f*ck you".
And good luck to all of you guys.
I really adore those who got great acceptances! Also I hope, that those rejected will make the schools be sorry about the decision.

just got an acceptance email from Caltech physics this morning, and my roommate told me there's a letter from columbia applied physics/applied mathematics in the mail for me (i'm gonna check out our department colloquium before i head home to check out the letter tho).
My good friend told me he got a call from a professor of astroparticle physics at Yale this afternoon saying he'd been accepted.

Got an e-mail from Penn State today, in, TA+4k fellowship. They said 500 apps for 20 spots, which seems like a lot.
Domestic, applied to condensed matter expt, gre 800q/690v/5.5w, phys gre 750, gpa 3.5, top 25-50 liberal arts school, no pubs, have done about 9mos. research in optics totally unrelated to what I applied to.
GL to all and congratulations especially to those who got into those sick schools that I knew were good for physics before I ever started in physics.

Haven't heard from the following 2 schools yet:
UCSC (Astro)
Stanford (Physics)
From what I can tell, every other school I applied to has sent out acceptances already. If you have heard from the above two schools, please reply and let me know.

Sheez ... 6 in 140?? Is that domestic or int'l? Tough break either way ...
Good luck with your other places ...
Am I the only one on this board with not a single acceptance yet? Haven't even heard from most of my places ... just hopin' that whatever's left is good news ..

@CPT: I've heard from one school, but save the two schools I applied to that no one has heard from, I think the rest of my applications are toast. I wouldn't take it personally; the acceptance rate is VERY low, even for the backups. If you assume a 10% chance you'll get into any particular school and you apply to 10 schools, your chances of not getting in anywhere are still about 35%.
yeah, I guess so, it still is pretty damn frustrating waiting for them to announce on a sporadic basis. With all this anxiety I can't get any work done nowadays ... is it just me, or are the rest of you also near nervous wrecks right now (except the ones with two publications, 990s and 4.0s of course, but they've already gotten into MIT and whatnot )?
@ Quaoar
A 10% chance you get in somewhere = 90% chance you don't get in. .9^10 = chance of getting in NOWHERE when applying to 10 schools (assuming each is an independent event of course, which isn't really the case) = 35%
Therefore, the chance of getting into at least ONE school of the 10 is 1 - .35 = 65%

@mathlete: Yes, exactly. Of course, that's just a guesstimate of your chances. For Arizona and Berkeley, the chances are 4% (ignoring qualifications), and for other schools the chances might be as high as 30%. The point is, there's still a 1 in 3 chance you won't get in anywhere when applying to 10 schools under this naive assumption. Sucks, but like I said, people shouldn't take it personally.
Results so far:
U of Wyoming (astro) - accepted by phone
UMass (astro) - accepted by email
Arizona (astro) - rejected
UC Berkeley (astro) - rejected
Still out:
Johns Hopkins (physics/astronomy)
Harvard (astronomy)
UCSC (astronomy)
UCI (physics/astronomy)
Cal Tech (astro)
Cornell (astro)
UMD (astro) - waitlisted
Hawaii (astro)
Washington (astro)
I know some people have heard up/down on places I still haven't heard anything from, kind of stressful.

just got an email to go visit princeton (for the plasma physics program), so I assume that means I've been admitted.
@CPT: I agree with the others, don't worry just yet. I was getting very paranoid from not having heard from any of my physics programs while everyone else on the board was announcing acceptances from a bunch of schools, and I got 3 notifications in the last 2 days...if you're international, it may take a little bit longer for the news to reach you, as it seems like there are still a number of schools out there that *insist* on sending mail rather than using electronic communication. good luck
