Mentioning prospective mentors in the statement

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Mentioning prospective mentors in the statement

Post by thisisphysics » Wed May 22, 2019 8:10 pm

Hi all!

In my statement, I will be mentioning several professors I am interested in working with at the university. Is it wise to say in the statement that I've contact them or no? Or is it best to just describe their research very briefly and say I am interested in working with them?

If there is already a communication between you and the prof, and that the prof has agreed to accept you. Then yes, you can write something like... “from my discussion with prof X in May, I am interested to...”

But then you’ll be able to only name fewer professors, as you are expected to narrow down your choices after having discussions beforehand.
