Listing Grad school responses (Admits & Rejects)...

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Got an e-mail today from Carnegie Mellon, in with a teaching assistantship.

Glad I got in somewhere respectable since I kind of bombed my GREs. :( Hopefully I have luck at Rutgers & Stony Brook too.

Is the interview still competitive? Or is an interview a sure thing of getting into the school?

Asianbob -

It's pretty much telling you that you've been accepted. They want to woo you into going to the school and give you an opportunity to ask questions. The only way you'll get rejected is if you royally mess up (like sleep with a professor's daughter or something) :D

@phun: No idea whether whether UCSD sent out a big batch of emails. My email was individualized, but from the graduate coordinator, so it seems they're at least beginning their first major round of emails.

My stats:

School: Ivy
GPA: 3.8

Test Scores:
Q: 800
V: 700
W: 4.5
P: 880

Research:
- two labs at my university (condensed matter)
- summer at national lab (optics)
- currently doing a year of research (I graduated 06)

Publications: 2 in preparation

I applied to schools saying I wanted to do biophysics

good luck with the rest of the schools. I am interested in doing bio-related research in a physics departments as well. Hopefully I'll get to hear back soon from some schools.

Is the Biophysics applications reviewed separately from the other physics research fields? Did you apply early or round the UCSD deadline?

Not sure if Biophysics applications were reviewed separately (although I could imagine that considering UCSD does have separate PhD track within dept. for Biophysics). I applied around the deadline, Jan 10.

I wouldnt worry too much guys. When people heard from USC and I hadn't, I was pretty worried. But only a week later I heard from them.

So I'm thinking that even first round doesn't go out all at once necessarily. At least, Im hoping thats the case, especially since, like evidently many of you, I also applied to UCSD.

Have any international students heard back from Physics departments anywhere? I'm not counting the biophysics guys, as they seem to have earlier deadlines, but have any Physics departments replied, or more specifically any Condensed Matter program?

I'm gettin' anxious now!

@strange.attractor: Well ... my stats are :

International student

GPA: 3.7

Test Scores:
Q: 800
V: 580
W: 4.0

Physics GRE: 990

Research:
- one year at my uni. (optics)
- summer in a prestifious internship program (condensed matter)
- currently doing some research work as part of my course requirements

Publications: 1 in preparation

I applied to Princeton, UIUC, Stanford, Michigan State, Indiana & Syracuse and stated that I'm interested in theory in condensed matter, though in some of the places I also ticked the theory undecided option in the subjects your interested in.

I think my recommendations would be pretty strong, and one of my recommenders is a Prof. who did his PhD at UIUC, so I think that should help a bit, but now after seeing so many stats here, I'm worrying about my own. I don't have a single publication, and almost everyone over here seems to have atleast a couple of them.

Good luck to all of you (including me :D)
I'm just going mad, waiting for that email in my inbox now ...

There's not too many people who post here, CPT, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Most undergraduates don't have publications.

Thanks, that's consoling, but then anxiety and nervousness are pretty irrational  All the logical arguments on why there's not much to worry about, can't compete with a little booze in allaying my fears.

But thanks for the kind words :) I just hope, that everyone who hasn't heard back yet, does get to know by the end of this month, before we're total nervous wrecks

Even when you get accepted, the stress doesn't end. Having to choose where you're going to spend the next 5-6 years of your life is an extremely hard and stressful decision. Not only that, but knowing you'll be virtually poor at the same time isn't very comforting.

Just remember life's stresses never end until you're dead. So go out with your buddies and drink a beer. That's what I've been doing roughly every night :)

Syracuse doesn't seem to be tooo high up in pretty muchg anything as far as I know. Their condensed matter department isn't too great, but has some people working on interesting problems of high-Tc superconductivity. I'm not sure of their deadlines, both Syracuse and MSU said that they'll be informing by March 15th. I think that's what most of these places seem to say. Though with Syracuse, it would be a bit of a stretch as I sent in my materials little more than a week ago.

I'm guessing that Princeton will be the first place to intimate people if their early December deadline is anything to go by.

I guess the best advice to all of us on this forum(me included) would be: Stop bloody fretting so much!, and just enjoy yourselves now! :D

I applied there for medical physics as well, I was wondering if you heard from them yet.

I went to visit them during an open house. The grad students seem to love it there, and the program seems like it's real nice (very flexible too). The professors all seem nice too...so I guess I can say yes it seems like a good program.

The area around the hospital is kind of ghetto though.

I heard back from Boston U and UC Davis yesterday, and got into both. Unfortunately now a lot of the visiting weekends are starting to overlap so I can't visit everywhere affordably. Does anyone know if schools will still reimburse you for travel expenses if you visit at other times (not during their special "visitng weekends" for example)? I live on the east coast and a lot of the schools I applied to are out west, so I can't afford to fly to many of them on my own.
