Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Dear Richard,

We have completed our first round of offers and we do not know IF we will have a second round of offers. If we do have a second round of offers it will be after April 15th. At this time you have not been given an offer.

It's a particularly tough year especially for Intl. students. Was just informed by Minnesota that they decided to reduce admission offers by 20% (from 75 -> 60 students).

Given some connections with faculty I was hoping to be admitted - but now on the waitlist (or a smart rejection as you call it).

I also in the waitlist of UMN, but they sent me this e-mail at mid-March, saying that they have already made 48 offers.

How did you know they made you in the waitlist? I still hear nothing from them. But I dare not to ask since the director sent us an angry email, saying that "do NOT send Email to us about your application status. We are doing our best to keep you informed."
My!

Since I did pretty well in the interviews as their interviewers said, but I still had not received the offer. I therefore sent them an e-mail for inquiring the status. He promptly replied me and he never sent me an "angry e-mail".

This email was sent to a group on Feb 25. I thought there might be too many inquiry letters they got, so they were annoyed. But I did nothing. I don't think I should be treated like that. I am going to write to them. BTW, who was your interviewer, professor Kubota?

Yes, he interviewed me at late Dec, and he let English teachers to interview me at early March (test my spoken English since I am an international student). The group e-mail you mentioned probably only sent to American students.

@ Rohit
What was the date when Penn State snail mail was sent to you by them? How much time did it take to reach you?

I have not yet heard from Penn State . Also there was no reply to couple of mails I sent to inquire about the application status.

yeah, their email "problems" (seemed more incompetence to me) really pissed me off in this whole application/admissions deal. sorry about the bad news, helio.

So officially rejected rom U of Indiana astronomy today, by one spot. They were waiting on 1 person and if that person had turned them down they would have offered it to me. They were real nice tho, he was like "the whole committee shared the feeling that we would have loved to have you join the department, if only there was money for one more space".

oh well

Well, no Ph.D. programs for me! Was sooooo close to NMSU Astronomy, and rejected at the 11th hour. I got accepted to a masters program, though, and now have to decide if I should take it or work on Hubble for another year.

Rejected from Case Western today after being waitlisted. Oh well, their department has been going downhill since Krauss left anyway...
