How many of you have heard from graduate schools so far???

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

No schools at all.
I am worried after reading your post.

Congratulations!

You actually heard from Hopkins before the deadline closed? Was it the physics program or a program with an earlier deadline?

Was that the biophysics dept., tnoviell which in fact had an earlier deadline? The physics Hopkins deadline is 1/15 so its odd that people would be accepted earlier than the deadline. Not odd to grab a great candidate early, but odd to start it all before the deadlines. More stuff in the fine print we don't know. But, they are probably so experienced at what to look for already, that they probably didn't have to sit and compare. But, congratulations!

Do they announce fellowship/assistantship decisions also this early?

It was the biophysics dept...the deadline was Jan 5 and I heard from them Jan 8...they're taking me and others on a full expense paid trip to Baltimore with all sorts of activites and dinners at faculty houses. It should be interesting.

No word on fellowships or assistantships.

re: acceptances

Post by l3amm » Sun Jan 14, 2007 9:30 pm

I was accepted to Yale Biophysics, and am interviewing at UCSF and Stanford in the next month. All of the visits are paid for completely but I live in the bay area so UCSF and Stanford are freebies. Anyway Yale announced a stipend of 28k plus tuition and health insurance, with whatever outside fellowships on top. I was wondering if anyone knows what an interview weekend from stanford or UCSF means? Both don't want me to dress up at all, they want it to be casual but I'm not sure if that means I'm accepted or if they are really going to be interviewing me?

Thanks

How could they write a letter that is so ambiguous that you are not sure if you are accepted? :) If its called an *interview* weekend ... But you should definitely call them up and ask them directly what to expect and how many people get accepted versus the number interviewed, are the professors really going to be there on the weekend otherwise who is doing the interview, is it one on one interview or by group, etc.... Then what does casual even mean, no tie, or just wear a lab coat and goggles so you look the part. :) And of course don't forget your list of questions to interview them with. :) Sounds exciting and fun though.

Best of luck!

I doubt a school would dump a whole bunch of money to bring you to visit them if they weren't accepting you. I don't think it's typical for them to just say "you're accepted" - that's your decision and I'm sure most people who applied to that school won't accept b/c there's other places to go.

l3amm,

That's a hell of a nice financial package from Yale. I'm not sure if i've even heard of a larger school-sponsored stipend, not to mention their apparent willingness to add outside fellowships on top without decreasing their award. I wonder if NSF or NDSEG would have a problem with supplying the fellowship if you are accepting money from the school as well...you could be living on an engineer's income as a grad student--not a bad lifestyle!!!

Sorry for the 'testing' . BTW, I think there is no need to bother / get tensed abt the guys who have got calls already....Johns Hopkins is good for bio related stuff, but not for much more...Be patient.....
P.S: Everyone since last summer seems to be getting a call from stanford or yale..... :D Wonder how many seats they do have...

Well ... we're onto the fourth week of January. A few of the places I applied to, told me that they'll start looking at application from this week. So ... fingers crossed ... Good luck everybody!

yeah, it looks like last year most people got their letters starting in february...i thought when I got all my apps in it would be such a huge relief to have it behind me that I could wait indefinitely for results, but with that magic month approaching I'm finding waiting to be seriously unpalatable.

More like unbearable  . I don't like the thought of my future destiny being out of my hands at the moment. I typically like to be in charge of my own life. I would have an easier time watching my whole life savings ride the waves in the stock market than what this waiting game is going to be like. Maybe we should have gone on African Safari or something to pass the time.

Hopefully the waiting game won't turn into the crying game :)

Best Wishes to all!!

I went to visit USC today (ate lunch with some profs, looked at some labs, and so on). The graduate adviser said the decisions will be made and sent out by the end of the month if any one was interested.

He said I was already accepted ... it was my most back up school (and the first I heard from) but it is nice knowing I got in somewhere. Good Luck All!

It seems like they updated the application status yesterday. Mine is marked complete. (Thank god things are actually happening)
On a recent email that they sent to applicants who submitted the online portion, they said the first recommendations for admission will be made by the 2nd week of February.

Waiting is harder than I had imagined...:(

Well... I'm getting confused by this new modality of physicsgre.com, but I guess it is still as informative and helpful as ever.

A professor from Santa Barbara called me on Jan 19 (Fri) and actually kind of interviewed me for 50 minutes. I received an email Sunday night offering me admission and asking me to go there in March 1-3, but this is in the materials department, I don't know how different it would be for physics. BTW, nothing about money.

Also this week, I received an email from Caltech Materials asking me to go there for their "Visiting Day," scheduled for Feb 16-17. They told me that final acceptances and financial aid packages will be delivered before March 15.

A UT Austin professor contacted me on Jan 19 asking me where else I was applying to see how was the competition if they wanted me to go there. This is in Physics.

Good luck, I hope you get many acceptance letters.
