New Mexico State Astronomy

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

New Mexico State Astronomy

Has anyone on here gotten an acceptance from NMSU Astronomy? I was waitlisted somewhere near the top of the list and am just waiting for someone to turn down their offer. So, I was curious if anyone on here had been accepted and if they knew what their plan was yet.

Haven't seen anyone else who applied there. Was considering applying, but then I read this in the part C of their FAQ (from the astronomy website):

"Tuition and fees run to about $1,900 per semester and the graduate students usually do payroll deduction, so that's about $315/month. NMSU graduate students have been working with the state legislature to pass a tuition-waiver bill for all graduate students across the state, and some year soon it may actually happen. In addition, the Graduate School provides one- and three-year tuition scholarships for some applicants."

And, from gradschoolshopper, their stipend is $20000 a year, which means that losing $315/month is a big deal.

Yeah, it's not ideal, and actually it's a huge pay cut for me lol...but that's okay. I can live in poverty. Apparently, they sent out five acceptances and told me that I'm on their shortlist and if someone turns down their offer, which 2-3 people usually do each year, then I have a good chance of getting the next acceptance. I've been rejected by everywhere else so far except BU and Wesleyan, but I haven't heard anything from them at all (Wesleyan's deadline JUST passed though).

So, basically, I was just trying to gauge the opinions of people who may have gotten in there.
