Yeah, I emailed Paula Perron asking for the status of my app. Then I got a reply from a prof in Applied Physics.gumpstuck wrote:That's rough. I've yet to hear.... did they send you an email?Maxwells_Demon wrote:Rejected to Stanford's Applied Physics.................................

No UCSB for me either. Ah well, I can ski and surf in wisconsin. (seriously! I can!) AND the people in Wisconsin are nicer.

Rejected from Chicago (in response to email inquiry). From the email:
Sounds like a weird year for them. Ah well, there goes my hope for a clean sweep (although I almost certainly wouldn't have attended anyway)...We received many more applications than we had anticipated and at the same time we were asked to reduce the number of students to admit, and as a result this year's admissions committee members have had to work extra hard to get through the evaluation/selection process, and in the end they had to turn down many highly qualified students.
Re: Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!
I feel so bad for Columbia. It couldn't accept us. I am thinking of telling them, "Please don't cry. I can still come to see you, if you pay for my airfare. Or perhaps, I'll apply for post-doc.... please... No Cry"unstudmaddu wrote:For me, Columbia regrets that my application has not been accepted.bosem wrote:Columbia is very sorry that they couldn't offer me admission.

There seems to be less applied physics people on the board this year that might be why there doesnt appear to be as many acceptances.

Rejection letter from Carnegie Mellon. Oh wait, I withdrew my application months ago and never paid the fee. Strange.

Re: Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!
Ah, ok. I just thought it was funny - never sent letters/GRE/etc etc and emailed the coordinator after some circumstances changed and I couldn't accept even if they gave me an offer. Got a very nice letter back wishing me the best, etc. Somehow this rejection doesn't sting so bad as the others

Rejected from Cornell Applied Physics: "unusually high number of applicants, limited spots, yadda yadda"
They actually got a full 3 paragraphs rejecting me and telling me I could still apply for a masters. how sweet.
Rejection #1, it feels kinda good to finally get it over with

UCSC down the hole 3/5/9, ah so nice not to have a chance this year. I have just UMass to tell me to go f*#$ myself and JHU to finally start sending those rejections and I'll be one lucky 10/10 - wew baby 10/10 nothing like the sound of rejection bowling. I'm taking courses at a Uni. < 50 now via extension for $$$ just to show people I can do something. Not my year, but then again it hasn't been a lot of people's year this year. Studying for the PGRE, and accreuing debt, nothing like desperation, nothing like it hopefully I'll work become stronger, tougher, and more of a physics beast than I ever have been. Maybe something good will come of this - the debt is going to hurt.
Congratulations on those who made it and for those who didn't or haven't like me don't ever give up if it means anything to you.

Re: Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!
Hey happymonkey, don't lose hope. I have a feeling that this is a tough year - we are just at a strange intersection of events with graduating and the economy going bust at precisely the same time. I think more people are going to be left out this year then in a typical year. You never know, though, you're still waiting, so keep the optimism up!happymonkey wrote:UCSC down the hole 3/5/9, ah so nice not to have a chance this year. Does that have anything to do with CA budget crisis situation and worse management than any other state?abeboparebop wrote:12 offers? You gotta be kidding, it's a pretty large department.clytze_pp wrote:This year UCSB only send out 12 offers... Tight burget..

~~
I HIGHLY doubt this... 12 offers is wayyyy too low. It does seem like it's a lot tougher to get in this year, but still. The budget is rough, but not that rough. Maybe they are AIMING to take 12 students, but 12 offers is way too risky. They'd probably end up with 1-4 students if that were true.cato88 wrote:Does that have anything to do with CA budget crisis situation and worse management than any other state?abeboparebop wrote:12 offers? If they were aiming for a smaller pool, my guess is that they'd have accepted ~ 50 students, aiming for ~15 accepting their offer, with the reason for doing this because in the last few years they might've taken in too many students...
Re: Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!
For comparison, UCSB had 29 first year students during the 2007-2008 academic year.
Re: ~~
I heard from a reliable source that this is indeed true and it does have to do with the CA budget crisis and with the economic crisis overall. the CA schools are sending less acceptances this year because they can only admit a few students and they can't use the same strategies as before (like accepting 50 students) because of the huge increase in people applying. If more students than what they can afford end up accepting their offers, they will be in real trouble.
Re: Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!
This explains well why all of my CA schools list just don't make any move...alkemas wrote:I heard from a reliable source that this is indeed true and it does have to do with the CA budget crisis and with the economic crisis overall. the CA schools are sending less acceptances this year because they can only admit a few students and they can't use the same strategies as before (like accepting 50 students) because of the huge increase in people applying. I am serious...by phone... maybe others are on the waitlist. since they cannot take the risk of too many acceptences
and someone told me UCSD..10 offers in total...(not very sure)only a few openning left..

Brown rejection via email on 02/06. I used the online inquiry form and the rejection was my response. The rejection email was very polite, though. This was my reach school anyway, I'm not surprised.
