Penn State: Application Withdrawal

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Penn State: Application Withdrawal

Post by babazula » Thu Feb 26, 2009 9:42 pm

I am wondering if those who already got into Princeton, Harvard, Berkeley,... as well as PSU can withdraw their PSU application, since they will definitely NOT choose PSU over Harvard.
Thanks in advance.

I understand your request and agree with all thats said over at the thread "plea from admissionsprof" but you also have to respect their right to take their time. Just because someone is in at harvard or berkeley they may still want to carefully weigh all their options and we who are waiting have to respect that. No one should feel pressured to make a decision cause they feel guilty or bad for others.

Also keep in mind that withdrawing later does not reduce (whoever is next in line)'s chance of getting in.

Heh. I withdrew my Penn State application last year. After I did so, they accepted me. So be aware that you may have to withdraw twice....

I don't think the OP is asking anyone to withdraw their app from PSU if there is a chance they would accept an offer from them. He's just saying, if you've already gotten into your top choice schools, if PSU is a backup, if you KNOW with like better than 99% certainty that you won't attend there, then for god's sake tell that to the school and give someone else a chance to get admitted.

I think we venture into dangerous territory if people begin threads like this. Of course everyone on a waitlist somewhere is hoping to get accepted, but those who are accepted have the choice of what they do with their acceptance. Obviously if they know they won't go to the particular school then withdrawing their application is the nice thing to do, but if they have any motivation to hold onto that acceptance then it's unfair to pressure them in any direction.

I understand your concern with the possibility that the spot you'd love is held by someone for whom it may mean nothing, but I guess I don't see this request for a specific school to be constructive. I think admissionprof's post and the subsequent discussion covers about everything that needs to be covered.

Im not sure if I agree with the "they have a choice attitude"/"nice thing to do"/"Its my acceptance ill do what I want" attitude. If they know they are not going to go then withdrawing is not the "nice thing" to do it is the right thing to do and not doing so is a jerk move.

i really did not mean that, and i think it is impossible to get such an impression from my post. i was just asking for a withdrawal of Penn State application for those who already got into top places. But if you believe that you could choose PSU over Harvard, then do not withdraw your application. I am not forcing anyone to do something. I am just asking that "If you don't think you will go to PSU, then please withdraw your application so I can get in". What's wrong with that?

By the way, I've just received an invitation for interview from Mathematical Institution of Oxford UnIversity, and I would choose PSU over Oxford. I specifically want to go to PSU, and that's why I opened a new topic, and did not post it as a reply to "plea from admissionsprof". If you are experiencing the same situtation, then as I said, do not withdraw your PSU admission...

Yes... He aslo told me that they would have some other people for interview next week. ( i am not sure if i could make it next week since i am required to get a visa )
d'you happen to know something about the level of the interview? i did the part iii of the mathematical tripos last year, so i am hoping that the level of interview does not exceed the level of part iii.

I am UK citizen, and am wondering if they're interviewing internationals first, since I notice another international on thegradcafe also got interview invite, but nothing from domestics (but then again that could just be because not many UK people use thegradcafe). I prob wont get accepted here, but I thought my profile was at least strong enough for interview and then rejection, hmmm...
I think the final deadline they have set for decisions (for funded places at least) is 27 March, judging by the website.

I don't know anything about the level of interview here unfortunatley (I'm hoping maybe you could let me know after you've been?? hehe). I had an interview with Oxford Physics last year(before I decided to take a year out) which didnt go too well, it was quite a bit more intense than the other interviews I have had since. I doubt the level of this one will exceed part iii however

Yes that was very sarcastic though!
I would like to support babazula's request too. Don't think that you are being pushed. It is just a polite request. Sometimes some may forget to withdraw their application because of being bz or not being aware of the situation of the other students. This is just a reminder for them.
