Astro admission news 2009

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

I know berkeley has starting notifying. Someone at my school heard 2 days ago from their physics department and got accepted.

Hm, I heard from the Berkeley astro folks today that they will have the results by Monday, and so we should hear from the committee around then. I guess they decided to let the waitlisted people know early?

Hope that's true, I can't get plane tickets to California until I hear back from them.

thanks. I wonder if they notified everyone today... I know that Penn State at least can't notify everyone at once; they haven't figured out the total number they're accepting yet (department head needs to figure out how many students they can budget), so they've accepted some people but not everyone they'll end up taking.

I apologize for being the bearer of bad news, but I am fairly sure that they will only be offering more positions if any admittees decline the offer.

Congrats on Michigan and Hawaii acceptances!

I just heard from Hawaii too. I actually visited on my way back from an observing run in November, and really liked it. It's going to be a tough choice, I think... being able to be a PI on telescope proposals as a grad student is a definite perk (Hawaii gets 15% of the time on the Mauna Kea telescopes).

Has anyone heard from Arizona yet? I saw on gradcafe just now that someone got rejected via e-mail today...which is kind of weird since it's a Saturday (didn't know they worked today?).

UC Davis offer with fellowship. No rejections yet but I haven't heard from schools others have so I assume the worst.

Congrats! Hopefully they'll admit in waves, but I couldn't find any data from past years on this.

He didn't mention when it is. He said he'll send me an e-mail so we can arrange for a visit. I havn't got any e-mail from them yet.

He (I think he's a professor) said he works in the same research area as what I specified as my interest. So maybe they let professors from different research areas call students according to student's interest.

Accepted, Texas A&M.

I was surprised by the offer, $1850/month sounds like a lot of money for a college in the middle of no where.

i think it is inflated because of undergrads and you have to realize that Texas A&M has one of the largest endowments in the nation (No. 10) because of the oil money. It is the same with UT that give you also at least 1800+ for TAing because they have a larger endowment than MIT.

Not per student, and I think that's what's relevant when comparing endowments for such purposes.

Also, going to school in Texas, I've seen that Texas cities are relatively "recession proof," keeping the Texas graduate student pay relatively higher than schools in more economically troubled cities.

that is true but compared to the living cost Austin or college station for that matter are way cheaper than Boston, but the financial difference is maybe 2 to 3 k per year. who knows how they decide about TA pay
