Letters of rec question

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Letters of rec question

Post by FORTRAN » Mon Sep 01, 2008 6:56 pm

Just curiously, would it be prudent to ask the prof your doing research with to write a letter of rec for you even if it is not your graduating year, but it will be the last semester you'll be doing research with them? My only concern would be that it they might not have the best memory of you afew years down the road and the simple fact that it might be akward going back to a prof to ask for a letter of a rec when it comes time to apply.

If you really don't think you'll have much contact in the future with the prof then yeah, now is fine time to ask for the letter of recommendation. It never hurts to give them the heads up, but they may well choose to write it later anyways.
