Cambridge anyone?

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Cambridge anyone?

Post by stardust » Wed Apr 16, 2008 9:05 am

Is anyone considering or will be attending Cambridge? If so, which program and did you get funding?
I guess what I really want to know is, is the year long program in Cambridge worth attending?

indeed, i'll be going to cambridge next year for the Part III Maths. i didn't get funding from cambridge or any of the british scholarships, but i did win an NSF, so i'm going to use the first year of that to fund my studies for the Part III. i'm really looking forward to it!

@drken
Didn't you have to write a proposal for the NSF of what you will be working
on and researching? Are they really letting you give American funding to the
UK?

NSF reimburses you for the Cost of Education up to a maximum of $10,500 per fellowship year.
So, it may mean that you are still paying something for the part III tripos, no?

It may even mean paying about the same amount by the time the conversion is done. Is that really funding when you have to pay 10K yourself to apply a
paid for $10K? I suppose its better than nothing.

I'm surprised the NSF doesn't pay in full.

The Cambridge and Oxford math and science majors are based a tripos. Basically in the UK you only have three years to finish your bachelor degree because they don't have any general requirements. Part 3 is the last and hardest part, it is basically the whole grail of undergrad mathematics education in the UK

@stardust:

NSF fellowship = $30,000 stipend + $10,500 for cost-of-education

you can use it abroad (read through the documentation on their website -- note that this is not true for the NDSEG fellowship)

i did indeed write a proposal for what i would be working on when i applied for the scholarship, but after winning the scholarship i just submitted a "change of plan" or something like that, which was then approved by the NSF. so i guess yeah, they are "letting [me] give American funding to the UK", lol

the stipend + cost-of-education actually adds up to almost the exact cost of the part III (modulo minor deviations due to living expenses, etc.)

Well if you change majors you have to start over. think about that. there is no real space to take "fun" classes
