Rankings of Schools

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Rankings of Schools

Post by guguma » Wed Mar 12, 2008 10:20 pm

Does anybody know a source which can give the rankings of schools. I only know phds.org and it has too many parameters to tinker with. What I am actually seeking is a ranking list on High Energy Experiment.

The only place I know of that ranks schools by specific area is US News, but they don't differentiate theory and experiment.

Do they integrate theory and experiment?

I'm pretty sure they take the wedge product.

i dont think us news ranked high energy, i remember paying them for their ranking lists and that was money poorly spent...

the good thing is, they give refunds, so as soon as you realize how poorly spent your money was (and save all the rankings to your hard drive), you can get your money back. They do it quickly and with no questions asked :D

so could we gently ask you to copy paste the info you have available, so that we will not put banks and the U.S. News into the trouble of arranging transactions and waste cpu cycles and bandwidth on this matter???

thanks.

I think high energy is pretty much the same as elementary particles/fields/string theory.

Can someone tell me why UCSD is so high in condensed matter? Is it for theory or experiment? (I don't mean this in some sarcastic way either, I'd like to know who's doing the cool research.)

According to gradschoolshopper.com, UCSD has $3.9 million in Separately Budgeted Research Expenditures in condensed matter. That's more than any other school I've seen, in that regard. Of course, I am sure that number doesn't represent all expenditures, because one would have to be ignorant to believe that they spend more money on condensed matter research than Illinois. Still, that seems to show that they have plenty of funding, which is a good sign.

As far as who is doing the research that is responsible for their good reputation, I have no idea. I just looked at the website and found a few experimentalists who were doing things I thought were interesting. There's a pretty big supercomputing center down there, so I would guess they have some pretty good computational physics going on.

I am planning to visit next month, and hopefully I will get a feel for the strength and quality of their research.

I think UCSD is much stronger in biophysics( branch of CM) than in the broad area of CM. I would consider Brown as good UCSD in CM. There are experimentalist at Brown who discovered cooper pairs in insulators!
I do not hear any thing cool( about on going research in CM) about UCSD except the location. Well, I have not visited them, so this is just a random guess.

It surprises me that UCSD has such a funding in CM ( even greater than that of UIUC)
EDIT: I do not understnad why Princeton is so high on CM! Makes no sense. They do not have whole lot going on there. Penn State, Maryland etc can easily top out Princeton. Princeton, Brown, Yale are all of similar ranking in CM ( IMHO)

EDIT : forum is gettin pretty boring, so I am out again! gotta catch up with my classes and write the darn thesis!

I wish there was some ranking that including international universities (namely Canadian and European).

Thanks al-Haytham,

by the way does the ranking of these lists go further like 30th school or 60th school or have posted all that is available.

thanks again.

I've always thought it was kind of silly how the U.S. News subfield rankings don't have a set number of schools in each category. It's very arbitrary and doesn't really give a feel for where the work goes on in the field.

Oh well, I hate rankings anyway.

How many of you'll think that i made the wrong choice if i decided to go to Brown instead of W-Madison(based in terms of reputation in physics and future job prospects)? I know i am pathetic and only UIUC acceptance can help me out from this state of complete paranoia!But..... that is not going to happen. :( Anybody declining UIUC offers soon!

The wrong choice is only when you get there and you're miserable and don't get any research done. If it works out any other way you made the right choice. Neither school is going to look less stellar than the other, so what will make or break future prospects is what you accomplish while you're there. Personally, I know I'll do my best work in a large department; I would die at Brown, so it's the wrong choice for me.

VT, I personally know a relatively new physics prof who got Ph.D. from Brown and directly got a faculty position at a respectable program (no post-doc).I also know physics students (incl. a Goldwater scholar) who have turned down offers from other well-known programs in favor of Brown.

In the specific graduate field I am considering, Wisconsin does not have anywhere near the reputation that Brown has. I do not know Brown vs. Wisconsin in physics areas though.

I think this is the key point.

Thanks excel and will for your comments.

I am sick of such multiple choice questions that is directly going to affect my future. I hope I do not end up getting in the 700 club again in this multiple choice question test! :(

I am leaning towards Brown because it has a small physics deparmtent, and does nice work in condensed matter experiments, biorelated stuffs, and soft condensed matter too. Where as Madison is full of quantum computing only. I do not care how good Madison is in plasma or high energy theory, because I have no interest in those areas. The main reason I am leaning towards Brown is that they have what I like and are in the East coast too.

Hi,

I've been admitted to MS in Engg Physics at U Virginia . How would you rate the program? Worth spending money on.. since its an MS?
