Fall 2008 Open House Information

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

I know this isn't strictly Physics but can anyone confirm that MIT Nuclear Science and Engineering open house is this coming weekend, March 7-9? I'm still holding out hope for that program. (User "1420 Peach" said that the open house was March 7-9 in the "MIT" thread but before I despair too much I'd like to confirm this.)

Yeah, MIT's NSE open house is this weekend. March 7-9.

hahaha! guess it was true.

what...? stanford: march 31 - april 1, berkeley: april 2-3. berkeley said they reimburse up to $350, stanford $250. both places split with other schools...

Evidently the second wave of Berkeley admits is a slightly lower priority... or maybe funding has been used up. They'll reimburse me for up to $300... which fortunately will cover airfare from the East Coast for me.

Man, I must be a third-tier Berkeley acceptee, they only offered to reimburse $150.

I wonder if my location, rather than how much they like me, is what determines the amount.

Stanford reimbursed upto $ 500 for students travelling from east coast places, but only upto $250 for students living near the west coast. So, reimbursement policy=f (distance), at least in the case of some programs.

(By the way, this is not the physics dept. at Stanford).

I guess the People's Republic of Boulder decided they wanted an extra day on their calendar.

I'll be at Columbia's Open House on March 30 and UIUC's on April 4-5.

EDIT: For those looking for good deals on flights, JetBlue seems to always have the cheapest flights. Only problem is there aren't enough JetBlue locations.

U. of Arizona physics dept. visiting days are March 27-29. Not sure if I'll be there yet. You buy your own ticket and they reimburse you. Lodging is paid for.

I'm going Yale, Princeton, Berkeley, and M.I.T. open houses. Due to overlap, I visit Columbia on 26th and 27th and Stanford on April 4th and 5th probably. Chicago open house is a bit too late, so I visit them on 25th or earlier. God I hate staying on an airplane.... I just had >10hours flight back from the experimental on-site....

You can remove me from the Stanford Open House list. I am no longer able to make it.
