Conguats! The email I received is from UCSB graduate admission, and the email informs me that "Do not reply to this email address", so I think I am not responding... If you received an email from another address, I think you can say thank you for the good news.
Thank you, congrats to you as well! My email doesn't say that yeah, so I think I'll send a thank you note.

I think Cornell will be releasing admission decisions throughout this week. Two were released last evening. Hopefully we get good news this week!

Do you know if they were formal admission emails? Or informal notifications?

General question: does anyone know how early is too early to ask schools for status of admission? How late is too late? Is it good to ask them? Bad? full of questions. Thanks! (If i posted in the wrong area, let me know!)

I saw a few offers from Stony Brook in gradcafe and nothing from Minnesota or Brown. Can anyone tell me if Stony Brook is done sending offer letters? There is not a single post of acceptance from Minnesota and Brown.

There is no official date by which schools are required to notify applicants of their status. Because the Council of Graduate Schools has set April 15 (http://cgsnet.org/april-15-resolution) as the *earliest* students must provide a decision whether to accept a *financial offer,* most schools notify applicants of their status by mid-March, so that prospective students have time to consider their options. However, offers of admission (and even financial support) continue through mid-summer for some schools. As a general rule, if you have not heard from a school by mid-March, it is reasonable to contact them at that time to see if they can provide an update. But, realistically, if they have not contacted you, it is because they have nothing yet to say (ok, there are the horror stories of acceptance letters ending up in applicant's junk-mail folder, so it might also behoove you to check your spam folder periodically during the admission season).

While we are on this subject, let me reiterate a couple of points I bring up each year. For those of you who have been admitted to many schools: congratulations! You should take the time you need to consider your options, including visiting all schools that you think you might realistically attend. However, if you know that you will not attend one of these schools (it was your safety, your research interests have changed, your personal situation has changed, etc), then it is in *everyone's* best interest for you to decline the offer as soon as you have reached this conclusion. In other words, you do not need to have reached your final decision before notifying some of the schools that you will decline their offer. This will enable the school to make another offer (modulo the number of over-commits they proffered in the first place) and help students on the wait list learn their fate early enough to factor that information into their own decision making.

Also, every year, I read complaints about how long it takes to hear from some schools. While I understand the frustration, and how slow response times contributes to an already stressful time, the reality is that your applications are being read by faculty members, who are balancing normal research, teaching, and service duties. Finding time to read (carefully!) the application folders, schedule meetings to discuss applicants, and reaching a consensus on admissions decisions can be difficult. While all schools want to get their first round offers out as quickly as possible, sometimes other factors (committee member's travel schedule, other commitments, etc), delay the process. So, even if a school sent offers out on Jan 20 last year, it is not necessarily true that they will make offers on Jan 20 of this year.

Again, congratulations to those of you who have already received good news from some schools. This can be an exciting time and I wish you the best of luck in your graduate studies.

Flagg, haven't decided yet about visiting Colorado State. I am trying to put in the application now (but the PIN email didn't come through). I will go through that process, get my transcript & scores to them, and see where else I have visit offers before deciding for sure about scheduling a visit.

Heard back from Chicago Physics today. It was an unofficial email from one of the potential advisers whom I was interested in. I had contacted him before the application deadline about his research and future opportunities for a grad student. He said that I should be receiving the official letter with the financial package and whatnot sometime next week.

Know from Caltech people that admissions are coming ``soon'', and talked to a guy at Princeton a while ago (a little over a week ago) who also said ``soon''. Dunno about the others.

Got the same email, and based on reading the info they sent it seems like they plan to conduct interviews with potential research groups on-site. Has anyone heard of another school doing this? Will it strongly negatively impact my chances of ultimately getting in if I don't go to the visit day?
