Decision Dates 2017
Hello.
I thought it would be useful to have a thread similar to this one http://www.physicsgre.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6232, which was started around one year ago.
I copy the description made by the user thehairupthere when he created the topic last year:
" I decided to start this thread where we can all post admission status along with dates so people panicking that they didn't get a reply yet can panic some more (or at least get an insight on what's going on)
I'm assuming no one yet has had an acceptance or rejection, but most deadlines are tomorrow (15th December) so we can start panicking as soon as that (even though most admission results are sent starting late January/early February)".
So yeah, I'm quite nervous. :S
Greetings, and good luck to all!

But well, in 2015 the same thread was opened on Dec 14, and in 2014 on Dec 25, so maybe it was around time for this year.
Anyway, I know it's around 1 month too soon to get notifications, but I can't wait

I received one acceptance letter on 12/21! Early Christmas gift, but it might be due to the University being a private one? IDKeternalwait wrote:Just a bitcorebake wrote:Someone's anxious...

The waiting is eternal and I feel like dying so I decide to post something here. (The same thread had gotten to the second page by the same time last year)
Two groups under the same department sent me separate interview requests - I found it quite interesting that they dont communicate or they do but still want to interview me separately.

There is a rejection from Caltech applied physics on TGC. This is a little bit terrifying

Got an acceptance from UCSD physics!

Re: Decision Dates 2017
Is it just me or are admission committees much slower this year than last year? By this time last year, there were some acceptances on thegradcafe from both Brown and Washington, Seattle. Nothing this year thus far Well, I at least got into UBC, but I really want to hear back from somewhere in the States, even if a 'safety'. Sorry, just a bit anxious.
Re: Decision Dates 2017
The early AAS meeting this year means a lot of departments would have waited until after this to start looking at applications in detail, so I would expect a lot of schools will be posting results about a week later than usual due to this.stronglycoupled wrote:Is it just me or are admission committees much slower this year than last year? Just got accepted into the Physics Ph.D. program at Michigan State! They sent me the decision via email. I'm on cloud nine right now.

Got a call from the admissions committee at the University of Arizona. They've made the first round of acceptances for the Astronomy PhD program and will be contacting those who were selected via phone calls.
Details are to follow in the coming weeks.
Visitation dates: March 2nd, 3rd and 4th

Thank you! It was only via phone call. They said that it'll take a week or two for the system to update the status. Emails should follow afterward.cosmosis wrote:Congrats! Had a phone interview with Princeton today. I think it went pretty well, though I was nervous. They said they should be notifying people in early February, but I'm not sure if that's just for the plasma program or other physics fields as well.
My friend already got accepted there, but he's chemical engineering.

What do schools generally ask during phone interviews?theladybug wrote:Had a phone interview with Princeton today. I think it went pretty well, though I was nervous. Re: Decision Dates 2017
I've only had this one and also one for a summer internship, but both have asked me details of my more recent research experiences and what my favorite physics class in college has been. This one also asked why I want to go into plasma physics.manbeard95 wrote:What do schools generally ask during phone interviews?theladybug wrote:Had a phone interview with Princeton today. Congrats! May I ask when this call was? (I didn't have high hopes for getting in early here, but still want to get a sense for things...presumably everyone would hear within a day or two.)milkywayguy wrote:Got a call from the admissions committee at the University of Arizona. They called me yesterday (1/18) at around 4PM PST. I was told that they will indeed be contacting everyone within a couple of days!
Re: Decision Dates 2017
Thanks. Guess who I got a call from this afternoon...? Guess I must be about the end of the list, but I couldn't get a sense for it (sorry, anybody else waiting)milkywayguy wrote:Thank youckitc wrote:Congrats! May I ask when this call was? Is anyone still in the dark for Duke Medical Physics PhD? I saw decisions on thegradcafe, but I haven't heard about anything for myself yet. The interview weekend is scheduled for 2 weeks from now, so I getting a little anxious.
Re: Decision Dates 2017
Got an email from UMich Ann Arbor for astro PhD. Visitation is on March 17th and 18th.

someone has an acceptance from Umass Amherst (astro) up on gradcafe- cue anxiety
Re: Decision Dates 2017
Do admission decisions for international students usually come after the domestic ones ??
Re: Decision Dates 2017
Unofficial acceptance (told by potential PI) last thursday at UCSB. He says they've selected their first round of admits already and official letters will go out "in a bit."
Re: Decision Dates 2017
Also spoke to a Princeton guy who said that offers will be going out ``soon''.
Re: Decision Dates 2017
Got an interview request from the Astronomy Dept. of Santa Cruz...
Re: Decision Dates 2017
I'm starting to have a bad feeling about my application to Princeton as they obviously sent out quite a few interviews recently (according to this thread, tgc and people around me) and I didn't get one
Re: Decision Dates 2017
Ditto...and they make it sound way more serious than any others I've had so far. Now I'm nervous...Yiiiiii wrote:Got an interview request from the Astronomy Dept. of Santa Cruz...

I have the same feeling.. Sounds like an interrogation..
It is the only one I got so far tho, so at least it tells us what to prepare.
Let me pray we will both be fine...

Re: Decision Dates 2017
In which field are you? I think interviews in astronomy seem far more common than in, say, hep-th or cmt. If you're applying to the latter I wouldn't worry, but if the former then maybe worry just a bit.anirekj wrote:I'm starting to have a bad feeling about my application to Princeton as they obviously sent out quite a few interviews recently (according to this thread, tgc and people around me) and I didn't get one

Same here! I wonder how many people are being interviewed.Yiiiiii wrote:Got an interview request from the Astronomy Dept. of Santa Cruz...
Re: Decision Dates 2017
AMO, and I know at least one AMO guy who got the interview from princeton. Considering that there is only one active AMO group in Princeton, I think my chance is kinda low now.stronglycoupled wrote:In which field are you? Yeah, the first guy I talked to from Princeton said they should be notifying people by early February, but that could have just referred to the plasma lab or to the Department of Astrophysical Sciences, which it belongs to.

Haven't heard anything from Princeton plasma physics yet. I knew it was sorta a long shot anyway with my GRE anyway.
Re: Decision Dates 2017
Heard back from UIUC in the middle of the night last night. Stipend looks little low, but they said fellowship decisions haven't been made yet, this is TA or RA-ship. CME.

A Chicago CMT acceptance on the gradcafe. I bet it's metapuff. Congrats, dude! I'm starting to get nervous now. I really, really want to hear back from somewhere in the States. I'm starting to think I should've applied to more universities.
Re: Decision Dates 2017
It seems that Wisconsin, Madison started sending offers, I am getting very nervous now, I know that my chances are low given that I am an international student with not so good GRE, PGRE and little research experience and only 25 percent of the total offers are made for internationals. But I still have a faint hope. Who knows

Re: Decision Dates 2017
Sometimes, international students with low scores in GREs have got admissions if they have strong enough LOR and good SOP. I hope that you can get an admission to the univsrsity. For me, I have incomplete research experiences (2 without papers). I have still awaited for the department of astrophysics at Austin, Carnegie, Northwestern, and others. Waiting is the hardest part in one's life.aewais13 wrote:It seems that Wisconsin, Madison started sending offers, I am getting very nervous now, I know that my chances are low given that I am an international student with not so good GRE, PGRE and little research experience and only 25 percent of the total offers are made for internationals. Re: Decision Dates 2017
Yep, that was me. To be fair, I haven't received the official offer yet, I just heard from an admissions committee person and one of the cool CMT professors who I want to work with.stronglycoupled wrote: A Chicago CMT acceptance on the gradcafe.
