Hello! As I make decisions about where to apply to and all that, I was wondering if anyone could give me a qualitative summary of the difference between going into applied physics and physic phd programs?

I am really interested in exploring Condensed Matter physics (i am currently in an undergrad lab doing AFM/STM construction), and was wondering if there were any major differences between those programs (especially if I want to pursue academia in the future). Thanks in advance!
