Getting off waitlist while committed

This hasn't necessarily happened to me (yet), but I'm wondering what people would do if they got into a place they were waitlisted at after already committing to another school. Of course, I'm assuming the place you were waitlisted at is somewhere you'd go had you been accepted initially, over the school you currently are locked into. What's a good way to go about this, and minimize burning of bridges?
