2013 Acceptances

Still have yet to hear back from UCSB, CalTech (applied), and Cornell (applied). Planning on emailing them later this week but, as I over think it in the meantime, should I take the lack of notification as a good thing (still hope) or a bad thing (just didn't bother sending out rejections).

I'm also waiting on UCSB, but expecting a rejection. If you look at their past results on gradcafe, they have a history of sending out a string of rejections near the end of March. I don't know about the other schools though.

Same here guys, waiting for UCSB Physics, and lets say quite desperately. I did email UCSB inquiring the status on March 15th, and they replied :

"Thank you for your email. Faculty are currently reviewing applications. You will be notified of the decision within the next two weeks. Thank you for your patience."

I'd say it doesn't hurt to stay positive as long as you can, even if the chances are gloomy (hey they are still reviewing, that means they do plan to accept a few more, so there may still be hope).

I got the same response from UCSB about a week before that, so I guess more like 2-3 weeks from when I sent.

I wonder why they are keeping us waiting if they don't plan to accept anyone else. As we can see in grad cafe, the last round of offers was sent on 1st March, i.e. 3 weeks ago. So if they were done accepting everyone they wanted to, then what is the point of keeping us waiting like this for another 3 long weeks and possibly more? It doesn't make any sense, unless of course they plan to send out another round of acceptances.

Well, to them there is very little to gain from sending us rejections early. In the event that an unusually large number of accepted students reject their offer, they have us to possibly extend more acceptances to. But with the visiting weekend only two weeks away, I doubt that they are planning on another wave. Probably just a few special cases here and there. I am personally expecting a rejection because I think it was a reach for me in the field I applied for, and there were some last-minute shenanigans with my essays.

I emailed Caltech Applied Physics, and they say they sent out all of their acceptances.... Their loss.

Any one applied for PhD in Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at University of Cambridge? Any idea when the decisions are coming out? In the website it says March, but no specific date. I emailed twice in the last 2 weeks to inquire, but apparently they didn't bother to answer!

It is practically impossible to go on to a direct PhD at DAMTP. You will have to do Part III Mathematics first.

I know, thats why I applied for Part III last year. I got accepted, but got absolutely no funding! So I had to take a chance this year! Any idea about when the decisions are coming though?

Has anyone not heard anything back from UIUC or Rice? I emailed them inquiries about 10 days ago and have received no response. I assume this means that they don't care about my app enough to even respond... e.g. I'm rejected? It's pretty weird. If anybody could let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Should I give them a call to see what's what?

I've heard conflicting answers concerning UIUC. One post on grad cafe said that they called and were told no more acceptances. However, someone at an open house I met said they had e-mailed and been told they might send some more out after the open house or something to that effect. I also know of someone who applied with same focus as I did who received a rejection along with the others on grad cafe earlier this month while I haven't yet received one myself. They don't usually wait this long, though it looks like about 4 years ago they might have.

I also read the post on Gradcafe that UIUC have sent out all the acceptances. I emailed them immediately and was told that my app is still under review so they asked me to be patient and wait for two more weeks (which btw expire tomorrow). Nevertheless, I don't count on them.

Just got my rejection from UIUC. Seems like overall I may have somewhat underperformed for my statistics or was just somewhat unlucky. In any case, at least my top two of where I've been accepted considered me one of their top applicants and are giving me quite generous funding.

UIUC told me that my application is still under consideration and asked me to be patient for 3 more weeks. They reminded me that the deadline for them is 15th of April.

Needless to say, I.m not feeling very positive about my prospects. Don't think I can count on a couple of wait-listings I received so far. Still, hoping for the best.

I'm a bit perplexed by this Columbia situation.
Their open house is apparently on Monday, and as far as I can tell, very few people have heard from them, and mostly in Astrophysics (I may be mistaken here).
Are they just accepting an unusually small pool of students this year? That seems the only logical explanation. That, or the open house can't be on Monday if they haven't sent out all acceptances.

You should call them, specifically the graduate secretaries. The ones I called were very helpful over the phone. I received no response at all when I sent out emails.

I am still waiting on UIUC and Stanford. I see that UIUC has been somewhat hashed-out already, though I may still call them tomorrow.

Stanford on the other hand...their website claims everyone should know of their status by March 1st. I have emailed several times, and called and spoken to the graduate secretary twice, all to no avail. I am contemplating emailing someone in the graduate education office or something.

Has anyone else failed to hear back from Stanford yet?

Thats weird, I thought they sent out all the decision for domestic students first, and then started working on international students.

"The Physics Department is currently not able to make any offers of admission for Fall 2013. In the event that we learn of any openings for Fall 2013 admission over the upcoming summer months, we will be happy to consider you for admission to our program. If you have already accepted another offer and are no longer available, please do let us know."

It's not clear to understand. Do you think they will evaluate the application again if they have opening for fall 2013?

No, they probably won't evaluate the application again. There are a few more months to go before the Fall term begins and in case someone decides to pass on the offer, they'll extend the offer to you if you want it.
