Re: 2012 Rejections
Has anyone heard from Rice U astro? I've seen a few acceptances for physics but nothing from the astro side of their physics & astro dept.

Re: 2012 Rejections
@hyc34, did Berkeley say that they had already sent out all their offers when you called? In other words, do you know if there's any hope for anyone who hasn't heard from Berkeley at this point?hyc34 wrote:+1 and rejection from University of California Berkeley by phone inquiry.qed wrote:+1r2d2 wrote:Rejected by Stanford just now.
EDIT: decided I couldn't wait any longer--rejected via phone inquiry.

Berkeley accepts one in seven (from past year statistics). this acceptance rate is definitely not low.
so i think as im (we are) rejected, i suck.
Re: 2012 Rejections
What you say is correct for domestic. TheY have a very lower acceptance rate fortransparent_silvery wrote: me too

International IMHO. So I personally don't hope in uc Berkele too much

Who did you contact/call?. I also want to call them.hyc34 wrote:+1 and rejection from University of California Berkeley by phone inquiry.qed wrote:+1r2d2 wrote:Rejected by Stanford just now.

Rejected from MIT by email this morning. Apparently they had 30 spots for 750 applicants.

Re: 2012 Rejections
from AIP's statistics the acceptance rate for internationals isnt that low either... even though berkeley's not like caltech or harvard which has half of the students foreign.ale87 wrote:What you say is correct for domestic. so i feel really bad. the rejection email says they have 867 applicants and the eventual class size is 45. base on their past practice, they should have given out about 3*45 = 135 offers.

Re: 2012 Rejections
did they change the status of your application on https://gradadmit.berkeley.edu/apply/login.html after sending the rejection email to you? I haven't received the rejection mail yet and there is no change on the status page... Does this mean they were too lazy to send the rejection email or still there is a chance to be admitted?transparent_silvery wrote:from AIP's statistics the acceptance rate for internationals isnt that low either... even though berkeley's not like caltech or harvard which has half of the students foreign. so i feel really bad. the rejection email says they have 867 applicants and the eventual class size is 45. base on their past practice, they should have given out about 3*45 = 135 offers.
Re: 2012 Rejections
regarding the berkeley issue, how come and they have not notified all the rejected applicants? Does this imply that there is gonna be a second wave of acceptances? and btw, did anybody get rejected via email?
Re: 2012 Rejections
Universities don't always notify people in a timely manner. Even those who are rejected outright aren't usually notified for a quite a while. A quick search of previous years' application profiles will answer your question. All you have to do is search "Berkeley" and take a look at when people were accepted. Short of someone from UCB posting some inside knowledge, this will likely be the best indicator.vasilis wrote:regarding the berkeley issue, how come and they have not notified all the rejected applicants? So I did this and found that there was the usual wave (right around now), plus some others who were accepted later (2nd week of March). Most of the rejections seemed to be in the 2nd or 3rd weeks of March. The take home lesson: sit tight and hope for the best!
If waiting is too much to bear, you could always call/email them as well!

When I called they said that they had "just started notifying rejected applicants."vasilis wrote:regarding the berkeley issue, how come and they have not notified all the rejected applicants? Re: 2012 Rejections
last year I had to ask for my rejection letter.
Re: 2012 Rejections
So the real question is, should I call Berkeley and get my hopes dashed, or should I let myself dream for another two weeks?
Re: 2012 Rejections
CU Boulder yesterday.
Haven't heard back from Minnesota/St Louis(Washington)/Indiana/Florida/Florida State. Is that a good/bad thing?
I hope I'm in their waiting list or sth. Otherwise I'm done. Back to parents' basement.

Re: 2012 Rejections
I don't know about the others, but Florida's open house is March 12 and 16, and I heard back from them in mid Feb. I think many other people also heard from them in early Feb or mid Feb too. For Indiana, they emailed me around the second week of Feb saying that they are reviewing the applications and will be making decisions in the upcoming weeks, yet I haven't heard from them for three weeks. I think I may be on the waitlist.
Re: 2012 Rejections
rejected by Clemson
I have not heard from Florida/Florida State either but as for Indiana, I just got an email 2/29 saying I was wait listed with "very high chances of being admitted" if that helps anybody.

Re: 2012 Rejections
Anyone has heard rejection from these?
UCSD Physics
Caltech Astro
JHU Phys & Astro
Columbia Astro
I hope they'll reply asap, be it rejection or acceptance! So far I got three offers, three rejects and two waitlists.

Interested in the ucsd physics.. also.. anyone heard back from mit nse?
Re: 2012 Rejections
Got inpatient and call Berkeley, rejected. Also called Harvard but they said that they could not check application status over the phone and to just wait for the letter....giving me some more false hope
Re: 2012 Rejections
@ccj1
How come Clemson rejected you? I thought you had a decent profile. Did they cite any reasons?

Re: 2012 Rejections
@blighter
Yeah I have a decent profile, but my PGRE was not stellar. Idk I have been accepted to 4 other programs and wait listed at 3 others. They said they had a huge applicant pool this year, larger than most, and they had to get rid of qualified students and they were sorry, you know a basic response! lol Its ok I am happy to be going somewhere

Re: 2012 Rejections
Yep. I am just a bit surprised that after getting accepted into much better places, you got rejected by Clemson.
Re: 2012 Rejections
Anyone rejected from UCSB yet? Last year there was a flood of them on 2/28 but haven't seen any so far this year...
I'm assuming I've been rejected (considering all the acceptances out and about) but it would be nice to know.

Re: 2012 Rejections
Almost certain that I saw one a while back, but I don't remember in what context. It was likely someone who called/emailed about their status. Hope you hear some good news soon!lxhrk9 wrote:Anyone rejected from UCSB yet? Last year there was a flood of them on 2/28 but haven't seen any so far this year...

Re: 2012 Rejections
I just got one more paper accepted. Not by an important journal though. Should I inform the schools which have rejected me about this, and would this change their mind?
Re: 2012 Rejections
Did you already tell them that you had a paper that would be published soon? I think it would really depend on the universities.. I mean, papers and publications are really more like bonus points, right? Also, I remember reading a comment from someone else that made the point that colleges don't mind rejecting qualified applicants because they expect them to get in somewhere else.. So, I think it'd be good to update it to universities who haven't made decisions yet at least, but in my opinion, I don't think it would matter as much for the ones that decided already (unless it was a groundbreaking publication).
Re: 2012 Rejections
Inform everyone anyway. You haven't got anything to lose. There's a chance it might be helpful.
Re: 2012 Rejections
Actually, yeah, blighter is right; nothing to lose from informing them. Ahhh don't listen to me, I've realized I normally give horrible advice ><.

Re: 2012 Rejections
Hey, anyone know if Berkeley is actually sending out rejection e-mails, or are the gradcafe people asking them via e-mail? :/ I don't know if I want to kill that tiny bubble of hope I have yet..
Re: 2012 Rejections
Well I know I've been rejected and have yet to receive a letter, so I don't think they've sent out any.
Re: 2012 Rejections
@ale87, did you e-mail them for a decision, or did they e-mail you without prompting?
Re: 2012 Rejections
They (Donna) e-mailed me yesterday
Re: 2012 Rejections
Another confirmed, Columbia!
