I dont get it... I take a regular-size multivitamin pill everyday and still no e-mail from MIT or Harvard... all these years I thought that "size doesnt matter" but I guess I should turn into the king size edition

Re: 2012 Acceptances
Nice, MIT today too. Best Valentine's Day ever? The only drawback was that I had to spend time with my girlfriend which prevented me from checking my email.
I gather Princeton was the only top-tier option you had? I understand.negru wrote:So i guess the bad thing about going to pton undergrad is you have to settle for one of these subpar places for gradschool, amirite
Did Anyone hear back from Yale, Princeton, U Penn, Chicago
Hello All,
Those of you who are applying to graduate school for fall 2012. Did anyone hear back from Yale, Chicago, U Penn, Maryland, Princeton?
I am talking about the acceptances or rejection from the Physics department, not applied physics or astrophysics depts.
Time is running by and neither of these top tier schools have replied back to me yet. So I wanted to know if anyone received any correspondence from these schools?
Thank You

Re: 2012 Acceptances
If you search for "physics" at gradcafe.com, you can see the schools who started sending admissions.
However, I believe that there are some spammers around.
They say Chicago will try to inform everybody before March, I am not applying there but that is what I heard.

@hatake, one of my classmates was accepted to Maryland yesterday (he also received a fellowship offer I think).

Call from LSU, unofficial acceptance, details to come by friday, recommended for acceptance by head of physics dept, asked for official transcripts and said I was a top choice. Kind of happy!

To those who got accepted by Berkeley, are you asked for official transcripts before or after this acceptance notification?

Re: 2012 Acceptances
I have not been asked for my official transcript.
They say they are still evaluating all the applicants, but the admissions committee decided to notify a pool of top applicants for "priority action" (they say they won't send financial info for another several days)

My dream school's Berkeley. Guys if you have an offer from Berkeley but you're thinking about Harvard Princeton etc, please turn down Berkeley asap. I'll give you a kiss in reward. I'm a hot oriental girl.
Re: 2012 Acceptances
I got a vague email from YALE, which directed me to their server, which had a message to sign up the upcoming physics open house. I don't know what that even means.
They didn't even send me a proper invitation email to the open house. Just a message which contains the sign up link. What do you guys think. Reading old messages from sticky: 2010, I found that Yale is known for doing that, for example:
Sticky 2010 posts.
Yale - Physics - HEP Experiment - Invited to open house. Called, apparently I'm in. 2/23. Got official decision 2/25
Yale -Accepted by email 3/1 by inquiry after I got invitation to their open house. Apparently I was already accepted but nobody bothered to inform me...
Yale - Invited to open house 2/23 via email. Officially accepted 2/25.
Did anyone receive something like this?

I'm pretty sure you got in. If you log in the online application site, you can check your decision letter. In that letter it says the official offer will come in the mail in 5-7 business days.hatake wrote:I got a vague email from YALE, which directed me to their server, which had a message to sign up the upcoming physics open house. Re: 2012 Acceptances
When do people usually officially accept offers? I got into my top school (the only school so far
), but I feel like I should wait until after their open house to accept. Probably doesn't matter either way.

Re: 2012 Acceptances
For my MSc, I waited until I visited all the schools before making a decision. One of my schools gave a decision deadline of Feb 28 (Canadian schools don't have the April 15 agreement thing). They did agree to extend the deadline by 2 weeks to allow me to visit and/or skype with everyone though.
I'm planning to do the same this time around for PhD so I should be ready for a decision by mid-March! If I had to divide my schools (before visiting) into preference groups, then I only got into 1 out of 3 in the top tier. That school is probably going to be my choice -- but I still want to visit to make sure that everything is actually what I think it is. When visiting other schools, I will be directly comparing them to my top choice and seeing if I can get the other schools to agree to everything I like about my top school (particularly the ability to finish in 4 years, how early can I take quals, how early I can pick my supervisor and do research, what requirements will be waived in recognition of a Canadian MSc, and funding packages). Also, I might have some incorrect information/biases about what the culture and climate is like in certain cities, so I am excited to see what the reality is!
I think most people would also wait until they at least visited their top choice. I would also recommend waiting until the visit because some of the reasons you like that school may be based on misconceptions that would be cleared up with a visit. But if you got into many top choices, it would probably be safe to turn down safeties about now. The only Canadian school I applied to is a safety in case moving to the US turns out to be no longer practical so I will keep it around until I am sure I will be attending a US school.

Re: 2012 Acceptances
The admissions decision can be found on the main page, it should be the last link on the bottom. Log into "apply yourself" and scroll down pass the "Application for Admission" section, there should be a section called "Decision Status: Available beginning x/xx/2012. Your application decision is now available online". At least that's where mine was although I got an e-mail from their website first saying to check apply yourself.hatake wrote:I dont know.
