Fall 2010 Open House Dates

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Fall 2010 Open House Dates

Why don't we have a similar thread this year? I am an int. applicant, but it would be good to know when there will be some more open positions. I have gone through the websites of the school I applied to, but I couldn't find much information on the open house dates.

I will add my profile when I have an hour or so free time (and more importantly proper motivation), since it's rather complicated - I want to add a really detailed profile since I made great use of this site for the last few months and I think this will be the best way to thank - ; and I did not list all the schools I applied to here because I thought this would be useful for everyone.

Texas is currently having their open house. Officially 2/17 to 2/19.

For those interested, one of the professors on the graduate committee said today that they have not even looked at international applicants yet. They plan to make a decision on domestic applications within the next two weeks. I assume they fill the domestic spots available first, then consider international applicants... seems like a strange system, but it's a public school and I'm sure they have restrictions on the amount of international students they can support.

Also talked to another professor who said that because other high ranking schools seem to be accepting fewer students this year, they expect a higher percentage of students to accept admissions offers. I take that to mean they likely will give fewer initial offers this year to avoid having too large a class, and may have a waitlist or some thing of the sort.

From the looks of the crowd at the open house, they may have invited more people to the open house than they intend to admit... seems odd to invite someone without admitting them, but it looks like that may be the case for some people.

Hope that's helpful!

Well, I'm gonna be in town for the first visit at Wisconsin, next week. I'm game for whatever.

I just have to say that Johns Hopkins' open house has been surreal. Touring labs, individual appointments with professors, wined and dined to the max, happy hour INSIDE the physics building, getting reimbursed for drinks at bars, party at the grad students' house...Absolutely a blast. Everyone in the department is extremely friendly. People there are really enthusiastic about their research and a lot of the grad students seem to have great social/recreational life outside of their study, going out/dancing/going to concerts more than once a week, even for those first year students. The grad students are very close to each other. The professors also have very close interactions with the students. The people there are just really proud of their department and the resources are truly phenomenal!

Georgia Tech math is April 2-4 but that's probably not helpful to you...

Is anyone here going to attend the NYU Open House on Friday 26th? I'll be there!
