Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!
Re: Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!
Got my rejection letter from Ohio State. It's okay, I probably would have declined thier offer anyway.

Received an email from a Prof. at Caltech applied physics in reply of my inquiry that "If you have not heard from us it means that you have been rejected."

Here's what I know: Berkeley is accepting 122 students this year, a few more than last year.alkemas wrote:I heard from a reliable source that this is indeed true and it does have to do with the CA budget crisis and with the economic crisis overall. the CA schools are sending less acceptances this year because they can only admit a few students and they can't use the same strategies as before (like accepting 50 students) because of the huge increase in people applying. If more students than what they can afford end up accepting their offers, they will be in real trouble.

After checking UT Austin's application status site, they wish to inform me that...
"Your application has been given careful consideration by the committee on Graduate Studies. On the basis of their recommendation, your application has been denied. If you have questions, please write directly to the Committee in your major department."
So *** them too.

Re: Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!
so email from michigan state
"Sorry for the delayed response. The grad recruitment committee has made their first selection. There were nearly 500 applicants and we could only select about 45 for 20 available positions. Unfortunately you were not in the first list.
Good luck with your grad school selection."
Think thats a rejection. Wish they'd just say it outright, this makes it sound like the possibility of a waitlist-i dont think so but someone else might who was reading this ya know.

It's kind of interesting, actually, that in astronomy, at least, some schools are reporting fewer than average applications and some are reporting more. BU, UWashington, and UCLA had ~15-20% fewer applications than normal, but NMSU had quite a bit more actually. Certainly, the economy is making people do strange things.clytze_pp wrote:Here we are! Re: Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!
Heh, yeah... my undergrad. institution only had enough money to fund 1 PhD student this year (normally they get 10 times that many, I guess), so it's a tough year. Here's to hoping that next year is better for all those who've had little luck so far...clytze_pp wrote:Here we are! So, if it matters, I've been rejected from:
UMD (Astronomy)
UMichigan (Astronomy)
UCLA (Astronomy)
UT Austin (Astronomy)
And that's just this year! Lol. So, 4 down, 3 to go.

Was going through my old emails, and i found my Rejection from the University of Michigan (2/26). S'alright though, after 5 years, I'm begining to tire of Ann Arbor.
Also rejected from University of Oregon and UCSC, yet I somehow got into Purdue. Still waiting for my rejections from Illinois and Penn. NOTHING MAKES SENSE ANYMORE!

What? Who did you talk to? Donna is super sweet. Give her a call: 510-642-0596. I initially emailed her and she didn't get back to me, but she is in her office right now. She just sent me my official email.

Rejected by CU. I forgot that I applied to this school. I should have withdrawn my application, so I could have rejected them first.

...and if I applied to the physics department, I would do that. I applied to the astronomy department. I think the guy's name is Dexter, and technically I didn't do all I could as I only e-mailed him.
Re: Rejection 2009.... Share your pain!
I hope you didn't write "Dear Mr. Stewart" or anything like that. Dexter, in this particular case, is not a he.astrofan wrote:...and if I applied to the physics department, I would do that. Well its a good thing that my e-mail was two sentences, neither of which used her name. I guess I should have been more formal and less direct with my question, but I am a little annoyed that I haven't heard anything.
It really isn't fair, as I am just frustrated that I have not heard from more than half of the schools that I applied too.

That's what I'm wondering about! I've applied for Stanford applied physics...techodestructo wrote:just out of curiosity, did anyone get into stanford applied physics?
Yet, I still hear nothing from them... This may be due to CA budget crisis coz I haven't
heard anything from UCLA and UK Berkeley, too!...
Arghhhh! I must remain calm...

but stanford suffered hits in their endowment, which basically determines the amount of money TAs getcato88 wrote:Stanford is a private institution.Ulquiorra wrote: That's what I'm wondering about! I've applied for Stanford applied physics...
