Acceptance 2009.... Share your joy!
Re: Acceptance 2009.... Share your joy!
quizivex - I'll definitely be at the open house. From the letter it seems like they've admitted fewer students than normal because they really don't want to go over an incoming class of 6.
Re: Acceptance 2009.... Share your joy!
Helio, I feel your pain, I still have 8 to hear from as well At least we're both in at Wisconsin
And Congrats to everybody!

Just got an acceptance from Princeton Physics (not plasma), so I guess Princeton's started. Also, I'm pretty pumped about this one! Princeton is definitely one of my top choices

Thanks everybody! And congratulations to all!!!
@nowhereguy, that's a hard question. Unfortunately, I'm more or less the first person from my undergraduate institution to have the chance to go to grad school at a top-10 school, so I don't really have many people to ask about which places are best for what I want to do. Mostly, I'm going off of feel (from meeting professors), rankings (yes, I know these are a horrible measure, but oh well), and the opinions of people on this forum. After visiting Oxford for the interview, I must say, it looks like a truly amazing place to study! I still have to decide what I think about the 3-4 year Ph.D. program though. It might be too rushed! Anyways, I'm kinda leaning towards Oxford (awesome campus and I love the UK), Cornell (it sounds like a great place to study, thanks grae313, and they've offered a really nice financial package), and MIT (I really liked the professors I met with and it's very highly ranked) right now although this will probably change once I've visited more places and met with more professors.
@babazula, I applied for DPhil.
@bryanwitha_y, thanks but your profile is quite envy-raising also :p Anyways, hopefully my story will give some hope to those who aren't thrilled with the outcome of admissions this year or to those who might need a bit more time to put their applications up a notch.

@trani, I really do hope to look seriously into Berkeley, but I can't really list it as a top choice since I currently know very little about the program. Are they very good for HEP-experiment? Maybe if I'm unable to make the open house, you can give me the run down Hopefully, I'll be able to go though!!!
@WhatCanYouDoFermi? and bryanwitha_y, I was notified by email with the promise of a snail mail package coming soon. Interestingly the email also apologizes for the delays in the admissions process citing the extremely large number of applicants this year.
@Helio, that would be nice (and I really do hope that Stanford will finish up their decision process soon), but since last year, I would have been happy to just get a single top-10 admit, I'd feel rather bad if I was trying to get a perfect 10/10 this time.
@G01, thanks, and yes I am. I've started to meet with as many professors here at CERN as I can and I hope to narrow down my options even before visiting weekends start up.

I got accepted to Chicago today!!
It's between Physics in Chicago and MIT in engineering. The research areas overlap for me, so I have to mail the professors and department before I decide.

Could the people who got into Chicago please post the visiting dates? I haven't heard anything one way or the other from them, but I'm starting to book flights and want to keep them in mind.

Just got the snail mails for U Dub and Columbia U. I have to say -- even though the acceptance email arrived weeks ago, there ain't nothin like gettin the fancy envelopes and readin it off of the thick paper with the embossed insignias and everything.

Got an unofficial acceptance to Northern Illinois on Thursday from the director of physics grad studies there, after a few back and forth e-mails about their website saying they still hadn't gotten my transcript.
It's not my number one choice, but it's a start.

Re: Acceptance 2009.... Share your joy!
I just got accepted by University of Texas (physics), notified by snail mail. But this seemed a bit strange as, according to the profile page, most people seem to have gotten in at the beginning of the month, notified by e-mail. I'm a little bit confused by this, and was wondering if anyone had an idea why this happened. I understand, of course, that they might have a wait list, but it seems unlikely that enough people have already declined for new spots to open up so soon.
I was not invited to an open house, which makes sense considering the open house had already occurred by the time I opened the letter, nor did they invite me to visit at any other time. I had thought that Texas was one of my top choices, but obviously I'd like to visit.
Does anyone else find this situation a little weird or have any thoughts? Maybe I'm just being overanxious.

Re: Acceptance 2009.... Share your joy!
I also just received snail mail from UT, and I was not invited to visit or anything of the like. The letter I received did not seem like an acceptance letter. It only said that I had been offered an appointment as a TA, and an explanation of all that. Was your letter like that?
Re: Acceptance 2009.... Share your joy!
Indeed. Though I think the reason the letter was phrased like that was because the physics department itself cannot officially offer acceptance, only the grad school can do that. But official acceptance is basically automatic if the department gives you financial assistance. I was more curious about the timing of the letter.aleph wrote:I also just received snail mail from UT, and I was not invited to visit or anything of the like. purdue acceptance. $17.5 K? really? my cat couldn't survive on that.
