Acceptance 2009.... Share your joy!

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Hey everybody! I've been stalking this board for awhile; thought I'd contribute.

I was just accepted to UCLA about 5 minutes ago for HEP Theory.

Good luck and I hope to see everyone (who didn't get accepted to top 10--you're out of my league) at open houses.

Has everyone that's been accepted to Rutgers been contacted by someone in their desired research group? From what I can see, only CM people (and maybe HEP?) have been accepted. I'm interested in astronomy and I haven't heard anything from them yet.

Arent astronomy people first contacted because there treated slightly differently and form a smaller applicant group.

I think we are probably contacted separately, but I don't know if we are contacted first, especially if physics and astronomy are in the same department.

Here... the people that got into UCLA astronomy most probably already heard from them... I know from a former undergrad there (now grad student here) that most of the spots are technically already filled before they even open the application. they know exactly who they want and they get them. I am not sure why they do that, but that is how they roll... like the whole paper recommendation thing.... welcome to the *** 21st century... and we don't use online system because we like to sit on applications for 2+ months.

And on a more happy note...

Congrats to everyone for their acceptances...

An international with an undergrad from an US school. Though from what I've gathered so far, I believe that most of the schools treat me pretty much like a domestic applicant.

What way to inform me of the offer:

"A letter of offer was sent to you last week. Unfortunately, an error was
made in the amount of stipend for the 12 months. Rather than $**,*** as
shown in your letter, the amount of the stipend is $**,***. All else in the
letter remains the same. "

UCSB - accepted. Unofficial e-mail from a professor at UCSB I worked with last summer. He said acceptance notifications should be sent out later this week, FYI for others waiting for UCSB.

if you have not heard anything from harvard yet, that that prolly means that you were not admitted. as far as i know Harvard send e-mails to admitted and waitlisted applicants about their application status once decisions are made. only rejected applicants are informed in mid-march.

Congrats! I got waitlised, something about only 6 spots available, etc. Do you think you will attend Princeton PPL? I imagine that this would be most (if not everybody's) first choice. I'm trying to gauge the likelihood of a spot opening up. Thanks.

I didnt know it was separate, but i guess it makes sense. I used to drive by a HUGE spread on route one just outside of town.

Yeah, "Plasma Physics" is technically part of "Astrophysical Sciences" or some such but is really the PPPL grad program.

bigdmiller/bryanwitha_y: The top of my list is Princeton/MIT...I'm not going to make any decisions until I visit both (as well as some of the others I've been admitted to). Unfortunately MIT has scheduled their visiting weekend really late (a week into April)... :/

Congrats sterculus, maybe I'll see you in a few weeks.

Don't lose hope, bigdmiller or anyone else on the waitlist... Usually most the students PPPL admits do come, but last year they accepted 8 and only 4 came. They had a waitlist but couldn't use it because the other students rudely turned down the offers last minute. So as long as that doesn't happen again, some spots should open up :D.
