Astro admission news 2009

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

I got an e-mail from an Austin grad student, but not from their faculty...basically the grad student congratulated me and asked if I had any questions and hoped I would go to their open house.

I am not sure. I just got an email from this prof about his project and how it relates to my research experience. I guess he just really wants me to work with him.

Yeah I was also contacted by UT faculty as well. I'm liking UT more and more, and Austin itself is pretty nice too. I've observed out at McDonald and dedicated telescope time out there for the grad students is kind of awesome.

It means the faculty put a gun to the grad students' heads and forced them to write us all emails gushing about the department and how much they absolutely love it there.

Just wanted to add another rejection to the Princeton pile. Princeton was not my top choice so whatever. Did like the e-mail rejection; much more time and environment friendly than mailing rejections.

I am sad to hear about Washington, it was high on my list of schools. Have to wait for the rejection letter now, which will probably take a week to reach the east coast.

Mail seems so archaic to me.

lol~ I can just picture that.

My e-mail does sounds pretty nice. The grad student is actually working on similar project as my senior thesis. And since I've been to Austin before I do agree it's a nice place.

Kind of off topic, but I still love postal mail. Nothing like receiving an actual, hand-written letter from a friend.

No, just a feeling I have. Sorry, I should have been clear about that, I was sad to hear they starting sending out acceptance e-mails last week. The deadline was early, and in early January they e-mailed me to let me know that they hadn't recieved my transcript. I just feel like they have accepted everyone they want. Most schools prefer to mail rejection letters than e-mail them (from my experience at least), which is why I was surprised to see the Princeton rejection e-mail.

Received a we-would-like-to-talk-to-you email from Madison, but no mention of the word "accepted". "You are now in limbo", I guess.

I have not. The only places I've heard from so far are OSU, U Chicago and UCSC.

The person who got waitlisted on grad cafe was actually me, haha.

Not sure why it showed up as 2/5, but I got the e-mail this afternoon saying that the committee had met and reviewed all applications...
