Any astronomy admissions yet?
Has anybody heard about any astronomy decisions yet?

I found out TODAY that I'm admitted to OSU astronomy
... but haven't heard from anywhere else, let alone submitted my last two applications.

Wow, that's early, congratulations! How did you find out? E-mail? I applied there, too, but some of my stuff might not be there yet.valkyrie wrote:I found out TODAY that I'm admitted to OSU astronomy![]()

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
I know it's early, but I also applied by the international deadline (Nov 30) so I guess they've had all my stuff for a while. Also, OSU is probably the place I had the best connections, in the sense that my recommenders have collaborated with (and in a few instances, were the graduate advisors for) several OSU faculty, that probably helped too.
I actually found out by phone call, followed by email with all the info. and he did mention this was unusually early, so I wouldn't despair (has the regular deadline even passed yet?).

No, the deadline is this Friday, 1/2/2009. I was just about to submit my application to OSU. Congratulations

that's awesome

I didn't know they admit anyone this early. I'm not even done with my application yet.

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
if i could get my recommender to turn everything in on time I would maybe have a reply as well... or OSU Physics deciding that they may have read the whole sheet from ETS with my scores, since my subject score is still missing according to them.

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
I am still puzzled that OSU astronomy would admit people even before their deadline, but I guess they can do whatever they want (I am happy for you, Valkyrie, just trying to figure out how that works). Anyway, all my stuff seems to be in, so we will see what happens.
I was looking around their site and found this:
How to choose a graduate program in astronomy: advice from the other side
Some of it might be useful, but overall it seems weird and complicated. And I don't get the guy's sense of humor.

Neat read, although maybe less useful from a physics point of view...Fritz.Zwicky wrote:I am still puzzled that OSU astronomy would admit people even before their deadline, but I guess they can do whatever they want (I am happy for you, Valkyrie, just trying to figure out how that works). OK, so only one person in the entire US of A was actually admitted so far to astronomy? What about physics?

I had an e-mail yesterday from OSU astronomy, waitlisted
Better than nothing, I guess. Still not a peep from anybody else.

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
Well, it's time to freak out a bit: the first meeting of the UWisc admission committee will be held next Monday, so probably by Tuesday I'll know if my life is going to change for the next years, if I would have to move to another country and leave mine, if I would have to sell everything I have (my place, my car and throw my personal stuff into the garbage can), if I would have to say bye to my loved ones and see them only once a year.... WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!???? WHYYYY GOD!!!??? WHY DO A WANT TO TURN INTO A PHYSICIST???!!! DO I HATE MONEY!!!?? DO I HATE TO RELAX AND THINK ABOUT NOTHING????!!!!!! WHYYYYYYYYYY????!!!!!
Besides that, I'm rather cool...
By the way: congratulations to the people that have been admitted already.

I hope you didn't mention these in your SOPmetric wrote:year.... WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!???? WHYYYY GOD!!!??? WHY DO A WANT TO TURN INTO A PHYSICIST???!!! DO I HATE MONEY!!!?? DO I HATE TO RELAX AND THINK ABOUT NOTHING????!!!!!! WHYYYYYYYYYY????!!!!!

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
Candidate A: My favorite thing in life is to relax and think about nothing. But when I can't do that, I like to ponder the structure of space-time.
Candidate B: I've loved astronomy ever since my mother lullabyed me to sleep with Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.
Which would you admit? Discuss.

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
meowful,
If I were in an admission committee, I would admit neither.

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
i have to agree with admitting neither....
i mean the first seems like he/she/it is not serious out it and the second just seems like somebody who lives in some dream world... of course depends on the other stuff as well

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
I think the question becomes interesting if the admin committee has to choose one of these two candidates.
In that case, I would choose the lazy ass (A) over the idiot (B).

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
I also got one from UT Austin two days ago.
Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
I've recieved a confusing e-mail from UT Austin.
They told me they are missing an official transcript; they only have an unofficial one.
which is totally strange since I've never sent an unofficial transcript to any places. I only sent out official ones. How am I going to make it more official?
anyway, I am going to send them another one.
ps. I don't know if this means I might get accepted. (hopefully yes)

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
My school offered the option to put a seal over the back of the envelope, to show that it hadn't been tampered with. Did you get the transcripts from the registrar and mail them out yourself, or did you have the registrar mail them directly? I recall at least one school I applied to required the latter.Ren wrote:I only sent out official ones. How am I going to make it more official?

actually i dunno what they are on about, since the website says:dlenmn wrote:My school offered the option to put a seal over the back of the envelope, to show that it hadn't been tampered with. Copy of Transcripts - may be unofficial

Re: Any astronomy admissions yet?
I guess there weren't any astronomy admissions today - another week of feverishly checking this thread down, hopefully only one or two more to go before I get my first acceptance.
