Importance of Research at External Schools

  • This has become our largest and most active forum because the physics GRE is just one aspect of getting accepted into a graduate physics program.
  • There are applications, personal statements, letters of recommendation, visiting schools, anxiety of waiting for acceptances, deciding between schools, finding out where others are going, etc.

Importance of Research at External Schools

Post by byrsa » Sat Sep 10, 2022 10:07 pm

I am currently a junior student at a good private university (tier2 physics and tier1 in my subfield). I am wondering if I should look for summer research at an external school next summer or continue working in the group which I joined in my sophomore year at my home institution. I am also in a theoretical research group at my home institution so I am likely to get 2 rec letters from PIs. I heard sayings that external research is important for PhD application but don't know reasons or its accuracy. Is external research essential for PhD application and how important is it? Thank you!

Yes, go for it. Having one more rec lec is also helpful for your application
