Visiting Stony Brook

Hi all. This is a question for people visiting Stony Brook on March 30-31. Are you getting accommodation from the university or did you have to look for one on your own? Since I am an international student, they do not reimburse any of my travel costs, so, I am trying to save as much money as I can! Please, if you know of any good deal on accommodations nearby SUNY Stony Brook, let me know, I'd greatly appreciate it. All I can find are rooms for over $100 a night.

Thanks

Gosh, that sucks. Usually domestic students get put up in a hotel (i.e. at most schools, as I have no personal familiarity with Stony Brook). If I were visiting Stony Brook (I'm not) I'd at least share my room with you, as hollow as that offer is.

I would try getting in touch with grad students, maybe through professors whose work you're interested in. I imagine they would be happy to let you crash at their place.

Hey, I'm going to be visiting that weekend as well. From what it sounds like, we are getting set up with graduate students there. So we'll live with some of them for a few days. I really like that method, should give a better experience of what it is like. Anyways, I would contact Stony Brook and bet they would set something like that up.

I guess I'll see you there!

Thanks for the replies and for the hypothetical offer, zxcv, that's really nice from you. I've already contacted the department, hope they reply soon. See you there, TheHawkbat! Btw, what field did you apply to?

If anyone else is willing to share the costs of a room (that is, assuming that you are not staying with grad students), let me know.

I'm condensed matter. Not the sexiest of Stony Brook's programs, but it is solid, and if its not set in stone that that is what I want to do. What about you?

I applied to high energy theory. By the way, I will put my stats on the other thread once I decide where to go, I feel that it might help international students realize that you need not be a perfect-scores applicant in order to get to good programs, even for the field I am interested in.

Any more people going to Stony Brook's open house out there?
