Cost of living in Hawaii

Post by IrishDude » Fri Feb 23, 2007 2:11 pm

I have been accepted to Hawaii astro with $30k TA. I know Honolulu has a very high cost of living. Does anyone know if it is possible to survive on $30k in Honolulu.

No, in fact every graduate student who has lived in Honolulu has died of starvation. They really accepted you so that you would donate your body to science.

the key is to live off the free food from seminars and colloqiums, if you have a schedule of all of them, even for the humanities and business departments, you're set. there's lots of free food to be had on a college campus.

You might want to consider avoiding housing costs altogether by living in a janitor closet on campus. I know a drug addict who did this and he turned out all right (he wasn't enrolled at the university though). You can shower in the dorms, which won't be suspicious so long as you shower in a different one each night.

I also got accepted and am between Hawaii and one other program. I've been talking to a 1st year grad student who says she is living very comfortably there, just breaking even. But she said she is by no means a poor grad student, and is doing plenty of spending apart from essentials. So it sounds like it is very doable.

Well, a lot of the food is cheaper than that in the University of Washington - Seattle (whose food is ridiculously overpriced now). :p

But I'm vegetarian, so what I say may not apply to others.

There's nothing wrong with that as long as you have something new and valuable to contribute. These threads aren't just for answering an OP's questions, they're also an archive of information that curious people in the future can search through for answers to their questions.
