"Months of Academic Work Experience"

I was submitting a profile to a grad school and they requested a number of "months of academic work experience."

In addition to work at a national laboratory I also had about three summers of work in a private research and development lab; I know the former counts, but what about the latter? Would that be academic because it's lab research or corporate because it's in industry? I decided to report the former for now but I might go back and change it later.
