Improving your SOP

Post by cabzx » Sat Dec 11, 2021 12:02 pm

This forum is missing some very useful resources regarding Statements of Purpose. I have compiled this short list of sites that helped me:

Criteria for Success
Focus on the aim. Your Personal Statement needs to convince a faculty committee that you are qualified for their program.
Customize it. It should convince the admission committee that you are a good fit for the particular program you are applying for.
Stand out. Highlight your skills and experiences that convey your strengths and differentiate you from other candidates.
Be precise. Focus on concrete and quantitative examples.
Be concise. Your Statement of Purpose is no more than 2 pages. The MIT CEE graduate program recommends 1 – 1.5 pages.

Qualify by quantifying and interpreting your experiences to demonstrate meaning
Be concrete, not vague.
Match by making sure your personal values are in sync with the organization’s philosophy
Include only relevant experiences.
