I was asked recently about some books that could be used to help prepare for the general GRE with emphasis on improving one’s score on the verbal section of the exam. Anyway, I decided to give my advice on this forum so that perhaps others could benefit as well. Note: I AM NOT VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE GENERAL GRE but I still feel that what I have to say is pretty good advice.

I would make sure I at least had the following three books. You may also want to pick up a book that helps you learn more vocabulary words I have heard good things about this book but I have not used it myself. There are lots of other vocabulary books our there as well. There are also lots of websites where you can get vocabulary words for free. There are also Princeton Review and Barron’s books that you may also want to get to help you prepare as well. They might be good to get slightly different approaches or to reaffirm your approach (there are many other books as well but it is probably best to work practice problems and study vocabulary words than it is to read 5 different books about tips).
