Hawaii Astronomy information?

Post by uhurulol » Wed Dec 24, 2014 12:11 am

I can't find any decent information on the Astronomy program at Hawaii Manoa -- stuff like acceptance rate, range of scores/GPA accepted, anything at all about admissions statistics and what type of students they like to see. Anyone have any info? Almost every other school I can at least find SOMETHING on.

Here you go...

Hawaii has a good (mid-range) program. They are strong for observational research (since they have all of the observatories). Some people apply there just to visit Hawaii. In terms of research and location, it's not a bad place to do a Ph.D.

I saw that, but any idea what their admission statistics are? I have a poor PGRE score that I think I have a chance of overcoming with research experience, and I want to know if I'll still stand a chance. I think the app is free, so I guess I might as well anyway.

Found it...

I think it would be a reach without good PGREs, even if your recommendation letter(s) are really good.
You can get a gauge of what types of students they accept from looking at where their current graduate students earned their undergraduate degrees (not all places list that, but Hawaii does).
