Larger cities = longer visits?
Does it make sense to visit schools somewhat longer if they're located in a large city, so that one could get a better "feel" of the city before deciding if it is right for them?
Re: Larger cities = longer visits?
Why not? It's your visit, do whatever you need to to decide whether it's right for you. I did this when I visited Amsterdam after getting accepted, two nights isn't enough for that city!
Usually what happens is the department will pay for your airfare/ hotel/ expenses/ etc during the official stay, and anything extra such as additional days will be out of pocket.

Ah cool - I see. The extra days won't be a problem now thanks to Airbnb. =)
