Hi,

So suppose you need to choose between two schools (masters):

First program: ranking 30s (US News), electrical engineering.
Second program, ranking 80s (US news), physics.

The research intended is quantum computing, and both schools provide similar research. Of course, there exist some differences, after all engineering is not physics, but let's say the difference is minimum.

The course work in the engineering school is flexible, with a possibility of taking some courses from physics department.

Ultimate goal: to get a Ph.D in QC in physics, preferably in a school ranked no more than 40.

Everythig elese being equal, what is the best choice of these two ?

If you like Physics research, go with the physics school. I know that ranking is not what you hoped it would be but most ranked schools and some non-ranked schools have a good enough faculty for you to carry out some good research and the education you receive is pretty much the same anywhere.
