Is UCR a good school?

Post by lenny » Fri Apr 10, 2009 11:37 pm

I am a student who got accepted in UC riverside however I couldn't attend to the open house. I wanted to know what do you guys think about studying a PhD there. I am particularly worried about its reputation for being the worst of the UC's and that people is not actually proud of going there. Would that affect my chances of getting a faculty position in a university in the future?

well from the rankinghttp://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandr ... rch/page+3 .. it really seems it might not be a very good choice.. but from the faculty list you can see some faculty are PhD's from MIT,UCB etc..

First, it is definitely not the worst of the UC's. UC Merced is worse. Second, it very much depends on your field of interest. Their experimental high energy is very strong, their high energy theory is pretty good, their condensed matter has a lot of people and is quite good. Third, being from a top ten school will help in getting faculty jobs, but below that it doesn't really matter. Your advisor and your work is more important.
