Masters Selection - Quantum Information

Post by kinghobo » Wed Apr 02, 2025 9:55 pm

Hey Everyone!

I applied for numerous PhD programs in Quantum Information, but I was only accepted to the following MS programs:

Columbia MS Quantum Science and Technology
New program and expensive, but the Ivy League degree could hold some value. Hard to know if I could get a job with just a MS, and I'm not sure that this program would set me up well for future PhD applications.

University of Wisconsin MS Physics - Quantum Computing
The degree can be completed in 1 year, which is nice, as I don't really want to live in WI... Would probably set me up for a PhD a bit better, but I'm still wishy-washy on this program.

Colorado School of Mines MS Quantum Engineering
Similar to Columbia, but I think all other options here are better.

Stony Brook MS Physics or MS Quantum Information Science and Technology
The connections to Brookhaven is a plus, and would likely set me up well for a PhD, but don't really have much more info.

Columbia and Stony Brook are probably my top choices right now.

I'm currently working as a software engineer, but my goal is to eventually work in the quantum tech industry, working on classical/quantum software interfaces (control, data analysis, etc.) I'm having trouble making a decision here... Has anyone attended these programs and have opinions? Do any of you have insight on if a masters would be enough to get the type of job I want? I don't really want to do a PhD at this point, but if thats truly what I need to break into the field then I will.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!
