Physics Open House Weekends?

Post by student » Sun Feb 26, 2006 11:07 pm

<message from admin>This thread was split off from the Physics Admissions? thread.</message from admin>

Could everyone please post when various schools are having visiting weekends? I'm curious because some of the schools I'm considering have conflicting weekends. There is a small number of weekends between now and April 15. Here's what I have so far:

Illinois: 3/10-3/11 or 3/31-4/1
Northwestern: 3/10-3/11
Yale: 3/24-3/25

UT's weekend is March 3-5
CU Boulder's is March 30 - Apr 1, or there's also an earlier one that I can't remember.

Haha so I guess that's bad news for washington, unless they're planning on giving me 2 days notice on their visiting weekend.

Split Open House Thread from Graduate Admissions Thread

Post by Grant » Mon Mar 06, 2006 3:06 pm

I split this thread from the Graduate School Admissions thread. Below is some of the information that I forgot to grab:

I'm going to UIUC's Open House in late March, hopefully I will meet some of you there.

Could anyone offer advice in my situation? I already bought my plane tickets to visit Yale, whose open house conflicts with that of Penn. Yale has a dinner on March 23, a full day on March 24, and a half day on March 25. Penn has dinner on March 23, a full day on March 24, and nothing on March 25. Should I change my plane tickets and fly into Philadelphia Wednesday night, March 22, then visit the campus and department all day on Thursday (alone, as there are no formal activities), go to some of the informal dinner on Thursday night, then fly directly from Philadelphia to New Haven Thursday night (departing 9:15 p.m.) to make it in time for Yale's Friday-morning program? Or should I simply visit Penn the following week, which would be a lot less stressful? I'm coming from the Midwest, but I don't mind the extra travel time, and I wouldn't miss much class either way. Has anyone visited a school during a non-open-house time? Thanks for your input.

Hi,

I just wanted to say thank you to Heisenberg, spinor_1_2, and jupiter_dubois for their advice on those programs. I will definitely attend open houses for Yale and Columbia. I have already missed OSU's (March 2-3) but I will visit that campus soon. I have a feeling that UCSC's program in condensed matter is not as good. They have a great overall program, but they seem to be more focused on astro and particle, so I will drop them to give a chance to those who may be wait-listed.
