Profile Evaluation for Graduate School

Post by benny&thejets » Tue Nov 09, 2021 5:16 pm

Hello, I am having some serious trouble deciding on where I would like to apply for physics graduate school. If anyone would be able to assist me or guide me as to what the general reach vs. safe schools could be for me, that would be most helpful.

Undergrad Institution: Big state school in the United States, not a top physics program but has some good department members.
Major(s): Physics and Mathematical Sciences (dual degree)
Minor(s): N/A
GPA in Major: 4.0
Overall GPA: 4.0
Length of Degree: 4 years.
Position in Class: Top 5%, (conservative estimate).
Type of Student: Domestic Male, Caucasian

GRE Scores : N/A (I elected not to take it)

TOEFL: (R: , L: , S: , W: ) N/A

Research Experience:
- 1 & 1/2 years of research within the n2EDM experiment here at my home university. I work primarily with nuclear physics and computational/physical modeling for the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland.
- 9 months of research with U. of Mainz in Germany, working with strong faculty there in physical data acquisition and modeling components of the n2EDM experiment through simulation.
- 5 months of computational modeling of lithium deposition in home university CM lab.

- Presented at NCUR
- Presented at the annual n2EDM research collaboration in Switzerland (virtual because of COVID).
- Presented at small poster presentations within my home university.

- Awarded DAAD RISE award for research internship in Germany for one summer (the university would like to have me back as a visiting researcher post-graduation).
- Participating honorary member of home REU program for one summer.
- Departmental physics/mathematics awarded scholarship.
- Highly selective university fellowship (in the Humanities, unfortunately).

Pertinent Activities or Jobs:
- Vice-President of SPS (I did almost all of the work though)
- Undergraduate TA in the Department of Mathematics
- Worked for a year or two in physics outreach at the local elementary and middle schools-- lots of designing and building physics models and demonstrations
- Peer tutor for lower level physics courses

Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help:
- Not that I can think of. Will add if something occurs to me.

Special Bonus Points: N/A
